Memphis

Experience Memphis, the capital of Ancient Egypt, located on the West Bank of the Nile about 20 kilometres from Cairo. According to Herodotus, it was founded around 3100 BC by Menes; although this is likely to be mythical, the city ebbed and flowed through Egypt's long history, battling for power against the towns of Thebes (Luxor) and Alexandria. There is a great deal of antiquity still on offer in Memphis, and it is well worth a visit.
