Average time to visit

Rwanda can be visited at any time of year. There are two annual rainy seasons: the big rains which last from mid-February to the beginning of June, and the small rains from mid-September to mid-December. Rainfall, especially over the mountains, is heavy during these two periods, particularly from March to May. The long dry season, June to September, is the best time for tracking gorillas in the Volcanoes National Park and for hiking in Nyungwe Forest Reserve.

A favourite for many years the Serena is a grande dame in many ways from the decor to feeling this is a hotel that has seen many people pass through its doors over the years. The rooms in the New Wing are more up to date and ask for one with a terrace if you would like to look out over the gardens full of palms and bright flowers and ornamental pool.  By night the garden is magical and the two restaurants both overlook this view making it a small oasis within the busy city centre.

Kigali Serena is Kigali's only five-star hotel. The cool, spacious, comfortable rooms overlook a free-form, tree-fringed swimming pool.

  • Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre

Visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial Museum should be on everybody's must-do list when in the area. The memorial is a haunting but stark journey through one of the most savage genocides in history, that took place in this tiny, landlocked country.
