The climate in New Zealand is incredibly pleasant, with warm and balmy summers and cold crisp winter months with wonderful clear, blue skies. The warmer high-season months of November to April are perfect for outdoor exploration. The colder months of June to August are the best time to ski.
Both North and South Islands are drier on the east coast, rather than on the west, where mountain ranges act as a trap for the moisture-rich winds from the Tasman Sea. It is also worth remembering that it is usually a few degrees cooler on the South Island than the North Island and as New Zealand has a maritime climate, the weather can change rapidly.

Christchurch's The George is the essence of supreme comfort, a luxury, contemporary hotel with individual attention in an intimate ambience, just moments from the heart of New Zealand's garden city opposite Hagley Park.
Located within walking distance of Christchurch’s city centre and opposite Hagley Park, The George is designed with stylish attention to detail complete with all luxury amenities and with a one-to-one ratio of staff to guests, impeccable service is guaranteed.
Stay in a modern, neutral and elegant suite or room with the latest technology and carefully selected furnishings combined to ensure all creature comforts are taken care of. Attention to detail and special touches are key here and The George is home to a series of lithographs by one of New Zealand’s finest contemporary artists Ralph Hotere, as well as works by John Pule and Stepen Gleeson.
Both award winning restaurants at The George serve simple classic cuisine, with a contemporary twist and clean fresh flavours. The sleek interior of Pescatore matches the chef's fresh, conceptual approach to food in the iconic Christchurch restaurant and at 50 On The Park a relaxing ambience and exquisite cuisine can be enjoyed both inside and out on the terrace.
From The George, Christchurch and all its glories are easily accessible as the hotel is centrally located. Take one of the hotel's mountain bikes and explore the city or take the historic tram from site to site. The Waipara wine region and wonderful locations for hiking and biking are all easily accessible from the city and make great day trips.
The George's 53 rooms are designed with stylish eye for detail, complete with luxury amenities. Executive Rooms offer comfortable beds and furnishings, some with balconies and the neutrally decorated Junior Suites offer additional living and bathroom space. The adjacent Residence houses the Residence Suites, perfect for those seeking privacy. These two suites can be booked separately or together. The luxury Park Suites are the ultimate with Bose systems, luxe amenities and panoramic park views.
Children of all ages are very welcome to come and stay at The George and 50 On The Park has a fun children's menu to welcome younger diners and introduce them to the concept of great food. The hotel can also organise babysitting on request if you would like some time out to yourselves.
The George's modern, minimalist Pescatore Restaurant has panoramic views over Hagley Park and is known as on of New Zealand's best contemporary dining experiences. 50 On The Park is a stylish, chic restaurant and with terrace for al fresco breakfasts, lunches and dinners and offers seasonal, freshly prepared food. Although the hotel does not have a spa in house the nearby Smile Spa has a wonderful array of pampering treatments. There is a library, an off site gym and mountain bikes for guest use.
The George is in the heart of Christchurch and overlooks Hagley Park so many of the city's gardens, galleries, shops, restaurant and other attractions are within easy reach of the hotel and it is easy to organise a day trip from the hotel for activities such as mountain biking, hiking, visiting the Waipara wine region or French inspired Akaroa.

This modern hotel in the heart of Christchurch is ideally situated to explore the city, whilst the views over Hagley Park remind you that you are definitely still in New Zealand. This is definitely a ‘hotel’ rather than a Lodge, perfect for those who want to mix up some classic New Zealand living with a more contemporary style of property.
Each room and suite features all modern comforts, with wonderful bathrooms (complete with The George’s own toiletries which smell amazing) and really comfortable beds. For such a relatively small property, The George has a choice of delicious restaurants. I had a delicious steak in 50 on Park downstairs and was also lucky enough to have a sneak peak of the newly refurbished Pescatore upstairs - the entrance of which rivals the most fashionable Mayfair nightclub!
