Like the rest of Malaysia, Sabah’s climate is hot and humid. Expect temperatures in the high 20s and low 30s throughout the lowlands. The state’s rainfall averages about 300cm annually and though it rains throughout the year, the heaviest rainfall generally occurs between October and January. At higher elevations the temperature is refreshingly cool, dropping to colder temperatures at night. Mount Kinabalu has its own climate and, above 3500m, temperatures can drop to freezing.

Sepilok Nature Resort is a simple property in Sabah, Borneo, within walking distance of the famous Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Only 30 minutes from Sandakan Airport, the resort is in a great location to start off any Borneo itinerary.
Sepilok Nature Resort has 23 timber chalets, set around a natural lake and surrounded by verdant gardens and lush rainforest. The resort's gardens are huge, with an impressive collection of exotic plants, including 150 different species of orchid and lots of fruit varieties.
Like much of the accommodation in Borneo, the rooms at Sepilok Nature Resort are fairly basic. However they do have air-conditioning and overhead fans, as well as en-suite bathrooms and verandas which either look over the lake or into the rainforest. There are two duplex bungalows, which have a downstairs bedroom and upstairs living room, and the design is also a bit more polished versus the standard chalets.
There is a restaurant in the resort's main building, serving local and international dishes. There is both indoor and outdoor seating, and whilst the resort does not have a swimming pool, there is a deck with some sunbeds.

Children are welcome to stay at Sepilok Nature Resort, and they will enjoy visiting the nearby Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and Sunbear Sanctuary. Whilst there are no interconnecting rooms, most can accommodate extra beds. However please note that some of the accommodation can either be on stilts or partially overwater, and the verandas do not have much fencing around them.

Set in the most stunning setting, within walking distance of the world-famous Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve, precious home of the last wild Orang-Utans of Northern Borneo. Their 28 bungalows surround the lake with dainty bridges connecting them. The natural environment has very much been left to its own devices, the trees wind their way around the paths, and the birds in the trees make a lot of noise. The main lodge has a lot of character and is a peaceful place to take your book in the early afternoon. I would highly recommend a stop here, it is quite basic, but perfectly comfortable and traditional. This all adds to the experience.

For many, Sepilok Nature Resort is the first stop in the east of Borneo and is the beginning of your jungle journey! It certainly does feel like an introduction to the jungle and the standards to expect for your stays on this side of the country. The location is lovely, all the chalets are dotted around a lake with the main facilities all located in one area. The resort is sheltered by a canopy of trees and plants so this is a good place to start your wildlife watching! Rooms are fairly basic but perfectly comfortable for a nights stay. Bathrooms are quite open plan! Service is fine, nothing exceptional but you will need to ask for things that you may be in need of.

The world's largest and oldest Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre is located at Sepilok, which is a 20-minute drive from Sandakan. An area of 11,000 acres of virgin equatorial rainforest has been set aside as forest reserve and Orang Utan rehabilitation centre. The resort's amenities and proximity to the sanctuary make it the ideal place from which to visit the Orang Utans and experience them in a semi-wild state as they are being fed and cared for by their keepers. This rustic eco-resort is set amongst landscaped gardens with manicured lawns, tropical plants, 150 different orchid species and trees around a large pond with 23 comfortable, air-conditioned timber chalets with hot and cold water shower and bath. The rooms at Sepilok Nature Resort are quite basic, but comfortable and traditional. As with any property in Borneo, you do not come here for 5 star luxury, but the chance to experience some of the most amazing wildlife and natural surroundings. An encounter with the ‘wild men of Borneo’ here at Sepilok, is something you are guaranteed not to forget!
