Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Any time of year is fine for a visit except from January to March, when heavy rainfall in many areas can make some roads all but impassable, and when there’s a high risk of cyclones in the east and northeast. In general, the best time to travel in most areas is April and October/November. The coolest time to travel anywhere is during the dry season (May to October).

Average maximum temperatures vary from about 30°C in coastal areas (higher in summer) to around 25°C on the hauts plateaux. In Antananarivo and other highland areas, temperatures during winter can drop to 10°C and even lower during the night.

Setam Lodge is situated inside the mountainous Ranomafana National Park in Central Madagascar. All the rooms have a river view and are surrounded by rainforest. It is the perfect base from which to explore Ranomafana and spot the lemurs found here.

Set up in 1986 to protect two species of very rare lemur, the golden bamboo lemur and the greater bamboo lemur, Parc National de Ranomafana covers 40,000 hectares of stunning forest, rivers and beautiful waterfalls. It is now one of Madagascar’s most popular parks and a great place to spot lemurs in the wild. The staggering views will hit you as soon as you arrive at the lodge, and will remain to amaze you for the remainder of your time spent at the lodge.

Setam Lodge offers the best accommodation in the area in 22 chalet-style rooms with en-suite shower rooms and 24-hour electricity. The restaurant serves good food in generous portions, which you will feel you deserve after a day scrambling around the forest in search of long-tailed primates. In addition to serving hearty meals, the restaurant has huge windows to encompass the delightful views of the national park.

Louisa Verney (Staff)

I wasn't sure what to expect from our accommodation in Ranomafana. Having driven for two days from Antananarivo I was looking forward to somewhere clean and comfortable to regroup. Setam Lodge offered just that. Large simple rooms with tiled floors and en-suite bathrooms with shower. They even had 24-hour electricity; though plenty of candles are supplied in case of emergency! This was the prefect spot from which to explore the park, which is semi-rainforest and rich in lemurs. Our driver/guide arranged an English-speaking park guide for us, who took us walking the morning after our arrival. It was a truly beautiful walk through forest, across rivers and high into the canopy, from where we had spectacular views. We had some great sightings of a red-bellied, sportive, greater bamboo and sifaka lemurs as well as vast and colourful butterflies. You need a certain level of agility and moderate fitness to get the most out the park as scrambling is recommended and this made it all the more rewarding. We were incredibly impressed by the level of guiding. Although his English was not absolutely perfect, our guide's knowledge was excellent, including his use of Latin names.
