Sikkim
The former mountain kingdom of Sikkim is a distinctly individual state, its population a culturally rich melting pot of Buddhist and Hindu traditions. Vibrant temples and serene monasteries cling to the verdant hillsides, where sub-tropical woodlands and winding mountain roads offer staggering vistas of the majestic Kanchenjunga and Himalayas.
Colourful displays of rhododendrons bring the hills alive between March and May, while exquisitely painted Buddhist monasteries add their own rich tones to the otherwise green landscape. Hiking and rafting both offer a chance to get into this spectacular countryside, while Gangtok, Pelling and Rumtek are home to fascinating Buddhist monasteries, the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology and delicious local delicacies.
