Nordic climate - May, June and July are the driest months of the year. Mid-June to August is high season, but most highland tours don’t operate until July because of snow. At other times, many tourist facilities outside Reykjavík are closed. From September through March, the night is dark enough to see the Aurora Borealis.

Itinerary

Fly to Reykjavik
Day 1-3

Reykjavik

Kick start your Icelandic adventure in the country's trendy capital city, Reykjavik. Colourful streets create a vibrant atmosphere and the city's lively food scene is well worth exploring. Spend your first day unwinding at the nearby Blue Lagoon - the soothing waters are the perfect place to relax after your flight, readying your muscles for the action-packed days to come. This evening you'll check into Hotel Alda, a cool and contemporary hotel at the heart of Reykjavik, and the ideal base for the start of your Icelandic exploration.

The following day, it's time to get your adrenaline pumping with a quad bike excursion through the mountains around Reykjavik. After full instruction from your guide, journey through the countryside to the top of Hafrafell mountain and soak up the beautiful views across Reykjavik and the mountains. In the afternoon, you'll take to the water to search for whales in one of the world's best whale watching areas. Board your boat and cruise through the Reykjavik bay, keeping your eyes peeled for minke and humpback whales as well as white-beaked dolphins and harbour porpoises.

Accommodation: Hotel Alda ( 2 nights )
Day 3-5

Golden Circle, Iceland

Next you'll leave Reykjavik behind and start your journey to the south, taking time to explore Iceland's famous Golden Circle, home to some of the country's most iconic sights. Step between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates at Thingvellir National Park, wonder at the hot springs at Geysir and admire the thundering Gullfoss waterfall. Continue on to Langjökull glacier for an exhilarating snowmobile adventure through the wilderness, taking in the awe-inspiring views of the glacier and the surrounding scenery.

After spending your first night at Torfhus Retreat in your own two-bedroom turf house, explore Iceland's south coast, a magical area of black sand beaches, powerful waterfalls and intriguing rock formations. Stop at Sólheimajökull glacier, where you'll have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to hike across the ice. Your private guide will show you how to use crampons on the ice before leading the way to the glacier's best spots and showing you the most spectacular views.

Finally, it's time to head home, but not before squeezing in one last adventure. Make your way down into the depths of Raufarhólshellir to explore this ancient lava tunnel. Here you'll be following the path of lava that flowed during a volcanic eruption over 5000 years ago, and you'll gain a unique insight into this hidden side of Iceland.
