Nordic climate - May, June and July are the driest months of the year. Mid-June to August is high season, but most highland tours don’t operate until July because of snow. At other times, many tourist facilities outside Reykjavík are closed. From September through March, the night is dark enough to see the Aurora Borealis. From mid-March to the beginning of June Deplar Farm is used exclusively as a heli-skiing destination.

Words will never do justice to the experience of staying at Deplar Farm. This remote and beautiful Icelandic Farm is a far cry from any farm that I have ever been to. The house has 13 bedrooms and it offers discreet luxury for those looking to explore all that the beautiful landscape has to offer in each season. Every small detail has been thought of and you will want for nothing during your stay at Deplar. As a guest, you will have a guest experience manager to ensure that your days are filled with all the activities you desire and that all of the details in house are as you wish. The house feels like a luxury mountain cabin that belongs to your wealthy best friend. Each staff member made us feel welcome and at home and they have a way of attending to your wishes and needs without feeling intrusive. Our gallery suite was spacious and the views of the mountains from our windows and balcony were unparalleled. Each room offers a complimentary mini bar with home-made snacks from the chef, juices, local beer and reusable water bottles filled with fresh Icelandic water. The main house offers a full service spa, a living room/bar area that includes breath-taking views of the surrounding mountains, a pool table, a ping pong table and a small music studio for those wishing to hone their artistic talent. The bartenders were always available and willing to offer you a complimentary cocktail; all you need to do is ask. The house also has a theatre room equipped with a projector and large screen TV for movie watching and video games - I can't imagine that anyone spends time here as there are so many other things to do and see on site. Dining at Deplar is an experience in and of itself. Breakfast includes a creative cold buffet complete with smoked local trout and overnight oats. You may also order anything you wish from the kitchen. Lunch is usually a simple two course offering; we enjoyed home-made pumpkin soup with fresh bread and a salad, the perfect fuel for our activity filled day. Dinner was three courses of the finest local ingredients and each bite was divine. There are no menus at Deplar and the chef ensured that the meals would be one of the highlights of our trip. The spa at Deplar is absolutely beautiful and you could easily spend a few days relaxing here. There is a fitness room, a yoga studio, 3 treatment rooms, 2 flotation pods, one indoor steam bath, one indoor sauna, one outdoor sauna (and cold plunge pool) and a relaxation room. There is also an indoor jacuzzi and a large indoor/outdoor thermal pool complete with Iceland's only swim up bar and a relaxing bench for Northern Light viewing. The house also has an outdoor patio with a fire pit and a few other common rooms that are cosy and welcoming. The activities at Deplar are endless and they depend on the season of your visit. In the winter you can snowmobile, alpine ski, cross-country ski, horseback ride, surf, paddle board, kayak, and snowshoe. The heli-ski season offers all of the winter activities in addition to heli-skiing. Summer brings more daylight and a few more activities like hiking, fat biking and fishing. Your private guide will ensure that your days are as action packed as you would like and their passion for the surrounding area and all that it offers is contagious. A stay at Deplar is a bucket-list experience and the house, the landscape and the warmth of the staff will stay with you long after you have returned home.

When driving up to Deplar I was immediately greeted by the beauty of the vast undisturbed landscape. As it is so remote, you really feel like you are a world away from everything. This beautifully converted farmhouse is the ultimate adventure playground. We had our own experience manager who completely personalized our experiences to our interests - we spent our first day cross country skiing followed by snowmobiling and horse riding. There are not many places in the world you can begin your day surfing and end it snowmobiling. The variety of activities here is what really makes it so unique, there is as much or as little as you want to do. Days can be filled fishing, hiking, whale watching or completely relaxing and unwinding in the lodge. The spa and geothermal pool provide a welcome retreat after a busy day. With just 12 rooms this luxury lodge feels more like a cosy home away from home with endless incredible activities, delicious food and amazing service.

People say theres no place like home. But those people clearly havent been to Deplar Farm. Subtly blending in with the landscape, until you actually arrive there you cannot comprehend just how fantastic a place this is. It is very much a mixture of lodge and hotel, old and new. This is a dream world for those who love being active in a stunning landscape without forfeiting luxury and facilities. What better way to round off a day of Nordic skiing, snowmobililing and horse riding than with a dip in the heated geothermal outdoor pool as the Northern Lights come out to play.
