Average time to visit
The dry season from December to April, doesn't necessarily mean no rain but there should be less of it, is considered the best time to visit Costa Rica. The 'green' season runs from May to November and there is more chance of rain during this time with September and October being the wettest months. It is important to plan well in advance for Christmas and New Year to avoid disappointment (ideally a year) as Costa Rica is extremely popular over this time with repeat bookers. Easter and during US school holidays are also best to plan ahead.

An absolute delight on the Papagayo Peninsula, this luxury hotel offers the service and luxury contemporary rooms needed to enjoy your time at the beach in style, but without loosing it's Costa Rican identity. All rooms are spacious and complete with all the most modern of amenities, and a shower room that opens up to your personal terrace, where you can enjoy washing the salt from your hair whilst staring out over the Pacific Ocean. With three fantastic restaurant options, including a tapas bar and fine dining Mediterranean restaurant, guests are spoilt for choice when it comes to dining, but if they feel more adventurous, the Andaz offers a free shuttle service to the nearby Four Seasons where you can access three more restaurants, as well as additional beaches and spa facilities. However after experiencing the spa at the Andaz, you might find it a little hard to move, with its completely natural and organic products and treatments and wonderfully scenic treatment rooms.

I really enjoyed my stay at the Andaz it was the perfect place to really relax after all the action and adventure of Costa Rica. The hotel was larger enough to keep me busy with plenty going on whilst never feeling like a massive resort. It feels exclusive and smart but totally unpretentious, a really lovely atmosphere with a real mix of couples and families. I had a great time taking out a sea kayak on the perfect still waters of the golf searching for dolphins and sea turtles in remote bays. The three tiered main pool is lovely with plenty of different areas so I could always find a nice quiet spot to relax away from the children playing. The beach here is hardly a looker but the water is crystal clear and great for swimming and if you want white sand the hotel offers a complimentary shuttle to the four seasons or another exclusive, nearby beach club where you can also enjoy a lovely lunch looking out over the water. It works really well and I also enjoyed the natural wild feel of their own beach, amazing for morning walks. The other thing I really liked about the hotel was the feeling of being totally surrounded by nature, from the iguanas sunning themselves on rocks around the pool to humming birds flitting between n the flowers in search of nectar or the monkeys swinging between the trees there is always something around to try and photograph!

BEST HONEYMOON HOTEL IN THE AMERICAS
Winner: Andaz Peninsula Papagayo, Costa Rica
Chosen for its remarkable architecture, far-flung tropical location and designer good looks, Andaz Papagayo has taken luxury in Costa Rica to a whole new level.
You won't find a more stylish retreat in Costa Rica than the Andaz Papagayo. It's the resort where everybody mysteriously knows your name; just three nights here will make you feel part of the family.
There's no formal reception area, just a gargantuan domed wooden structure, with views straight onto the Pacific. Here, the staff casually cluster, looking like a gathering of (ultra-cool) friends waiting for you to join the house party. Feeling at home is what it's all about, and each of the 152 villas and rooms reflects this laidback 'mi casa es su casa' vibe. Forgotten your flip-flops? Don't fret, there's a pair for each of you in your room, along with a colourful beach bag and his'n'hers straw hats.
You'll be hard-pushed to find a better view of the ocean than from the balcony in your (not-so) standard room. If you can bear it, wake early and chatter with the monkeys at sunrise, or race to the secluded private beach with a famous Costa Rican coffee: the perfect time of day to enjoy the rugged views. Burrowed into the Papagayo peninsula, the resort is under strict regulations to remain sustainable and to blend flawlessly into the tropical coastline. If you're looking for castaway eco-luxury, you've found it.
A mixology class - expect fire, smoke and some seriously cool cocktails in achingly hip bar Chao Pescao.

Andaz Papagayo is probably one of the most modern, funky and cool hotels I've come across. It emits a cool vibe from the moment you enter the lobby, where there are no stuffy check-in desks, instead its all open plan and vistas down to the ocean. The rooms are arty and modern, with an unusual style, lots of natural woods and sleek furniture. The Tapas bar Chau Pescao is home to the number one mixologist in Costa Rica, and I certainly enjoyed sampling the cocktails, well worth a visit for a sundowner and the tapas were tasty too.
You have a choice of two pools, one being adults only, which is nice if you're travelling without kids, and there are often monkeys hanging about which was fascinating to see!
Arenal Volcano Walk
The best way to get as close as possible to the spectacular Arenal Volcano is to walk the reserve’s easy series of trails, which will take you through secondary rainforest and former lava fields. The park is known for its diverse wildlife.
ATV Surf Trip to the North
Enjoy and exciting ATV excursion beginning in Tamarindo. From here, travel north along the coast until reaching beautiful Playa Grande. Take a refreshing dip in the ocean upon arrival before tackling some serious waves on your surfboard!
Catamaran Sail with Snorkelling
Silently glide in a catamaran along Costa Rica's Pacific Coast past exotic bays, golden beaches and tropical jungles, spotting dolphins, sea turtles and whales before dropping anchor in a quiet bay to go snorkelling or kayaking in the pristine warm waters.
Ostional Sea Turtle Excursion
If visiting between September and November, make sure to visit Ostional Beach where tens of thousands of sea turtles return each year to lay their eggs.
Stargazing and dining experience
Shoot for the moon and the stars with an exclusive stargazing and dining experience, enjoy learning about the sparkling southern sky, while enjoying cocktails and culinary treats infused with meteorite dust!
