Belize's climate is marked by two distinct seasons, the rainy season (June to November) and the dry season (December to May). The coldest month is January and the warmest temperatures are in May.
The busier time of the year for travellers to Belize is November to May, which are the winter months of the Northern Hemisphere. It is possible to visit out-side of these months but the rainy season in the Forest Highlands can be rather wet. Please note that from around mid-September to second week in October Gaia closes.
To start planning your holiday to Gaia River Lodge
Gaia River Lodge is a wonderful and peaceful retreat in the highlands of Belize. Perfect for honeymooners, this is a relaxing spot to experience some of the abundant natural diversity of Belize and its Mayan heritage, alongside comfort and good service.
Located in the beautiful Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve of Belize, Gaia River Lodge is a simple but tasteful retreat perched on the edge of a valley and overlooking the spectacular Five Sisters waterfalls. The lodge offers a choice of 16 well-appointed private cabanas ranging in size and location. With designs that make use of Belizean tropical hardwoods, traditional thatched roofs and varnished mahogany interiors, each cabana is fully screened for comfort, and features panoramic windows or a private veranda with hammock, ceiling fans, a bathroom decorated with hand-painted Mexican tiles, beds with pillow top mattresses and top-quality linens.
Gaia River Lodge provides the perfect base from which to explore Belize’s natural wonders. With wonderful views of both the falls and the surrounding jungle forest reserve, the lodge invites you to sit back, breathe deep, and relax to the sound of cascading water. The treetops are alive with bird activity, and bird watchers will love spotting species unique to this habitat such as the acorn woodpecker as well as regular visitors such as orioles, oropendolas, and kites.
There are plenty of activities to excite, from experiencing to some of Belize’s most important Mayan ruins, including Caracol and Xunantunich, hiking or biking along the many trails that wind throughout the surrounding Pine Forest Reserve, and horseback riding through the jungle to visit many of the area’s Mayan plazas and caves. The adventures continue with canoeing, zip-lining, cave tubing and rappelling, or boating along the local river. You can also swim in the clear waters of the river just a stone's throw away from your cabana, or relax in the sun on a tiny river-island retreat.
After a day of adventure, relax in a romantic atmosphere in a lamp-lit dining room and enjoy delicious local Belizean dishes and international cuisine prepared by our skilled chefs using locally grown fruits and vegetables, as well as seafood from the nearby Caribbean Sea. The lodge restaurant is situated directly above the falls, and offers incredible views, especially from the wrap-around verandah, perfect for a spot of morning bird watching or a sun-downer cocktail.
Gaia River Lodge has 16 rooms and suites that are simply but beautifully appointed. They vary in size and location. It's well worth going for one of the suites which have beautiful views over the waterfall and/or river, and are very affordable. There is no air-conditioning in the rooms but there are ceiling fans.

The lodge has a bar and restaurant, with wrap-around veranda, and although the lodge has no swimming pool, wild swimming in the river is a wonderful experience.

Gaia River Lodge is a beautiful, low-key boutique hotel located right next to the river with exceptional views of the waterfalls. A great option for couples looking for tranquility. Gaia's over 10s only policy ensures the atmosphere stays relatively peaceful no matter the time of year. Things to bear in mind, there no wifi in the rooms with the aim of guests completely disconnecting from reality and truly relaxed, and there is also no AC. Ceiling fans are however provided.

The best part of Gaia River Lodge is undoubtedly the location. With spectacular mountain, jungle and waterfall views it is a real quiet retreat. The rooms are simple and rustic, with thatched roofs and range in size. There is no air-conditioning or Wi-Fi in the rooms, but I feel this just enhances the jungle experience. Although there is no swimming pool at the lodge the waterfall makes for some great fresh-water swimming. I would recommend the property for couples looking to escape and for a bit of adventure. Make sure you take your walking boots!
