Useful fishing information
Deep sea fishing, reef and line fishing, freshwater angling and saltwater fly-fishing explained, and where's best in the world for each type of fishing vacation.
There are lots of types of fishing to enjoy in different parts of the world. Here you can learn a bit more about the experience each type will bring you.
Deep sea fishing
Take time to dust down your copy of The Old Man and the Sea, and prepare for some thrilling sport fishing action. Heading out by charter boat in search of game fish is a highly rewarding experience, and part of the fun is the camaraderie on board in anticipation of what you might find. Central America and the Caribbean have magnificent game fishing, and we can help you choose between trophy-size sailfish in the Sea of Cortez, huge black marlin and yellowfin tuna on Panama’s legendary Hannibal Bank, or blue marlin in the Barbados. Africa’s East Coast (especially Kenya’s Pemba Channel and the Mozambique coast) as well as the Seychelles also have tremendous fishing grounds, where many world records have been set; while further afield in the South Pacific, the waters of the Mamanuca Islands in Fiji and Raiatea in the Society Islands offer incredible fishing for mahi-mahi and wahoo. Many of these destinations offer both dedicated fishing vacations and options to include a day’s fishing within your overall vacation.
Reef and line fishing
Reef and line fishing generally offers greater flexibility, as it is easy to fit a half- or full-day’s fishing into your overall stay. For this reason, we tend to focus on top-class properties in great fishing areas. Among the best destinations for reef and line fishing are the Maldives, with both shore-based and boat-based fishing available. Giant trevally here will certainly test your skills and stamina as they strike dramatically before diving and running. Australia’s Great Barrier Reef also offers world-class reef fishing for Red Emperors, Coral Trout and much more, with day trips and overnight trips easily arranged from the mainland or from the island resorts; while the cays of Belize’s barrier reef offer pristine coral systems that are a magnet for snappers and groupers. The East Coast of Africa, particularly Kenya and Mozambique, is also a good choice, particularly if you’d like to combine fishing with a safari.
Purists regard freshwater fly-fishing as the ultimate expression of the sport, and we’ve selected a handful of the very best fishing lodges that offer some of the world’s finest fly-fishing. Foremost among these are the magnificently remote lodges of Chile and Argentina, where huge numbers of trophy-sized rainbow and brown trout await in the crystalline mountain rivers of the Patagonian Andes. Here you’ll also discover a sense of solitude coupled with genuine old world hospitality that’s hard to find in the modern world. Deep in the south, Tierra del Fuego offers luxury lodges where the sea-run trout fishing cannot be equalled, while amongst the wildlife-rich wetlands of northern Argentina and western Brazil, you can have memorable battles with the superbly aggressive golden dorado, while experiencing gaucho culture and the finest wildlife viewing in the Americas – a truly unique adventure. Down under, New Zealand also offers fabulous fly-fishing in the Lake Taupo region and Southern Alps, as well as a chance to experience the legendary hospitality and fantastic outdoor life in the Land of the Long White Cloud. Tasmanaia has also recently been ‘discovered’ as a prime fly-fishing destination.
Imagine yourself standing in crystal clear water, on a perfect white sandy beach, in short shirtsleeves and listening to your reel howling as a 6lb bonefish takes you all the way down to your backing line. Why not go for a Grand Slam of bonefish, permit and tarpon? Landing these three, or even making it an elusive Super Grand Slam by adding snook, is an achievable aim on a Scott Dunn fishing vacation. The northern Caribbean, especially the Bahamas and the Turks & Caicos, is synonymous with great saltwater fishing and has an enviable reputation for huge bonefish. There is a tremendous variety of fishing, from wading on knee-deep flats to poling through deeper waters, and both beginners and experts will find a great deal to enjoy. Add to this excellent English-speaking guides and superb family-friendly accommodation, and you have a hugely appealing all-round package. Alphonse Island in the Seychelles has recently become a magnet for record bonefish, and offers an enormous variety of species that can be targeted on the fly, including the remarkable milkfish, triggerfish and trevally. Belize offers perfect flats fishing, and is probably the best place to go for a Grand Slam. The Belizean barrier reef is also renowned for its incredible diving and offers non-fishers a great variety of other attractions.
