Travel to some of the least visited corners of Cambodia by heading into the country's north and eastern regions. Mondulkiri, Cambodia's easternmost province, is ripe for trekking to minority hill tribes and its also home to the highly regarded Elephant Valley Project. Explore further and you'll see glorious waterfalls tumbling over cliffs and hills shrouded in jungle and paddy fields.
Try your hand at dirt biking, wildlife trekking, quad biking and even zip-lining The area is luminous and ideal for families or couples wanting to get off-the-beaten-track. Further north, and on the border with Thailand, we find ourselves at Preah Vihear. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Preah Vihear is an ancient sandstone temple dedicated to Shiva that sits high up on the Dangjrek escarpment. With incredible views from its summit, and far fewer visitors than Angkor Archaeological Park, the area is fast becoming one of Cambodia's gems. As with most remote locations in Southeast Asia, accommodation in north and eastern Cambodia is very simple with slow service, and journey times can be very long. It's appeal suits those that are looking for a more authentic and tourist free experience in Cambodia and who want to really get under the skin of the country.
