Kayaking on the Mekong

Luang Prabang, Laos

Spend the day leisurely paddling along the mighty Mekong, admiring the picturesque scenery, and visiting some of the more interesting sites along this stretch of one of Asia's most famous rivers.

Your day will start with an hour-long drive to the north of Luang Prabang, where you will reach the village of Ban Hatya. Here your guide will give you some kayaking tips and safety instructions, and then the adventure can begin!

You will paddle down the Nam Ou river, reaching Pha An, where the Nam Ou joins the Mekong. Here you will stop for a picnic lunch on the sandy shore, surrounded by stunning karst scenery, before crossing the river to visit the Pak Ou Caves. There are two caves, both reached by steep flights of stairs. The site is visited by both tourists and pilgrims, who have journeyed to the caves to see the thousands of Buddha statues that have been placed inside. These statues range in size from a few centimeters to two meters high.

You will continue paddling down the Mekong until you reach the island of Done Khoun, where you will visit the famous Wat Done Khoun; a pretty temple with connections to the old Luang Prabang Royal Family. Enjoy some snacks before setting off for the last leg of your journey. After around 20 minutes of paddling, you will reach the village of Ban Pakxeuang. From here you will be transferred by road back to Luang Prabang.
