Average time to visit

Zambia has a moderate to sub-tropical climate with three distinct seasons: from November to March is the Emerald, or the rainy season, April to July is Zambia's winter, when the weather is cool and dry, and August to October is summer, when the weather is hot and dry. In terms of game-viewing, the drier months, meaning a higher concentration of game at the permanent water sources, are a superb time to visit. Alternatively come for some superb bird-watching at the end of the rains.

Situated in the middle of South Luangwa National Park, Mfuwe Lodge is a luxurious lodge containing 18 cottages overlooking two lagoons which attract a variety of game. Expect lovely rooms in a beautiful setting, and high levels of service.

Mfuwe Lodge is a wonderful place to start your South Luangwa exploration. An imposing and luxurious lodge, it is encircled by two of South Luangwa's permanent lagoon, guaranteeing excellent game-viewing right from the comfort of your deck!

Mfuwe's main area is large and airy, with a high thatched roof and a central bar leading out to a huge deck overlooking the lagoon, with an infinity pool.

Activities from Mfuwe focus on exploring the South Luangwa in day and night 4X4 game drives, all in open-topped vehicles, and accompanied by an expert guide. In the evenings these game drives become exciting spot-light night drives, perfect for finding Luangwa's predators such as lion and leopard, which are frequently seen.

At the end of the season, in November, Mfuwe Lodge is a very exciting place to be - a family of elephant, led by the matriarch (affectionately named Wonky Tusk) make their way straight through reception, climbing the steps and walking through the lodge to feast on the juicy orange fruits of the wild mango tree which grows in the lodge grounds. It's a wonderful time to visit the Valley in any case with the green shoots of the new season beginning to show, and electrical storms rolling around the edges of the horizon. Come in November for some absolutely superb and close up elephant viewing!

Mfuwe Lodge combines perfectly with its sister bush-camps in the southern sector of the South Luangwa National Park - Kuyenda, Chamilandu, Bilimungwe, Chindeni, Kapamba and Zungulila.

Mfuwe Lodge comprises 18 thatched chalets dotted along two lagoons' shady banks. The canopied verandas look out over the wallowing hippos and thirsty game so you really get a sense of getting close to the incredible african animals. The rooms are newly refurbished and very comfortable with their cosy sitting rooms, en-suite bathroom with a panoramic walk in shower.

Children of all ages are welcome to come and stay at Mfuwe Lodge with their parents. However, only children over the age of 12 years are allowed to participate on walking safaris due to nature of the activity.

The game-viewing potential at Mfuwe Lodge and the surrounding area is excellent. Walking safaris can be arranged on request, but the majority of outings are game drives, allowing guests to explore as much of this ample region of the Luangwa Valley as possible. Drives are led by an experienced team of guides, setting out at first light, and then again in the late afternoon when the wildlife is at its most active. After sundowners, spotlights are used to pick out a new cast of nocturnal creatures.

A dip in the swimming pool is a wonderful way to refresh between safaris.

Mfuwe Lodge is a wonderful relaxed lodge inside South Luangwa, so perfect gameviewing opportunities right from the deck. It overlooks a permanent lagoon where hippos can always be found lazing, and has just undergone a full refurbishment, making it one of the top lodges in the area.

The rooms are calm and tranquil, each with a view over one of the two lagoons which encircle the lodge, and the main area is large and spacious - we chilled out on the deck watching the wildlife and then took a dip in the pool.

In November it's a very exciting place to be - Wonky Tusk and her family, for years and years now, have been walking straight through the centre of the lodge (stopping at the reception desk for a natter en route) to pick the ripe mangoes from the wild mango tree in the grounds. They are so relaxed about this that guests are able just to sit and watch them as they pass by. And with the arrival of Wonky Tusk's brand new calf, the photographic opportunities (as well as the opportunities to go "awwww" at this little baby) are incredible.

  • Elephants at Mfuwe Lodge

In November, as the season changes in Zambia, the many wild mango trees start to drop their bright orange fruits. These attract huge numbers of monkeys and birds, but also much larger wildlife!

  • Game Drives in the South Luangwa

Game drives are the most common way of exploring the African bush. A vehicle allows you to cover distance quickly and comfortably and offers visitors the best opportunity of getting very close to wildlife in a safe and controlled way.

  • Green Season Game Drives

The Green Season, Rainy Season, Emerald Season, Secret Season - what ever you decide to call it, this is a beautiful time of year to be on safari. Activities are rarely disrupted by weather and the bush is full of life.

  • Night Drives

If you get the opportunity to head out after sunset you should take it. The bush transforms under the cover of darkness as the nocturnal wildlife gets going. Using a spotlight your guide will scan the bush for eye-shine picking out some great action.
