Itinerary

Fly to Hanoi
Day 1-4

Hanoi

Begin your journey in the bustling capital of Hanoi. As you wander down the energetic streets you will see how this city has kept its traditional charm whilst embracing the modern world, which is apparent through the fascinating architecture. We will arrange a private guide on your first full day to take you on an all-encompassing tour of Hanoi, with highlights to include learning about the ethnic minorities at the Ethnology Museum and meandering through the pristine courtyards of the Temple of Literature, a historic monument.  Of course, no stay in Hanoi is complete without sampling the delectable street food on offer; let your senses guide you through the bustling Old Quarter, surrounded by sizzling street food vendors and inviting bars offering Vietnamese iced coffee – made up of two espresso shots and condensed milk, a much needed energy boost after a day of exploring in the heat of Hanoi! Whilst you are there, you will finish your day with one of Hanoi’s famed Water Puppet shows. These extravagant plays act out stories of rural Vietnamese life and the beautifully intricate puppets are considered an art form in northern Vietnam.

Accommodation: La Siesta Classic Lo Su ( 3 nights )
Day 4-6

Mai Chau & Pu Luong

Today you will leave bustling Hanoi and be privately transferred by road through staggeringly beautiful rolling hills and paddy fields to the town of Mai Chau in north-west Vietnam. On the way you will encounter the rural village of Pu Bin, home to Thai and Muong ethnic minorities. This colourfully dressed community will show you their traditional way of living and you may even be invited to a family lunch! Your base for the next two nights will be at the undeniable beautiful Mau Chau Eco Lodge, encompassed by lush forests and a patchwork of rice paddies. You will hike through the many tribal villages scattered through this region or cycle through the narrow and winding pathways surrounding a sea of green rice paddies.  Enjoy the end of your day in pure tranquillity with a dip in the natural pool at the eco lodge.

Accommodation: Mai Chau Ecolodge ( 2 nights )
Day 6-8

Ninh Binh

This morning after breakfast you will venture further afield as you are transferred by road to Ninh Binh, known as “Halong Bay on Land” and it’s easy to see why. This playground for adventurers is made up of striking limestone formations and mountains that pepper the tranquil countryside. You will spend two nights at the peaceful boutique hotel Tam Coq Garden, which is nestled in this idyllic haven.  On your full day here, we’ll arrange for one one of the local rowers to take you through the wetlands on a traditional boat. Watching the rowers is fascinating as they have developed a technique to use their feet to operate the oars, making this an impressive and rather entertaining sight! We recommend experiencing this in the lesser known Van Long Nature Reserve. There are some rare bird species that have been spotted here so bring your binoculars!

Accommodation: Tam Coc Garden ( 2 nights )
Day 8-9

Halong Bay

Today you will visit Halong Bay, the land of formidable limestone formations rising out of the ocean, this UNESCO World Heritage site will be the scenic highlight of your trip. You will meander through these majestic rock outcrops by kayak or climb to the top of one of the islands for an aerial view of this other worldly landscape. You will spend the night onboard the Heritage Line Ginger, a traditional junk boat and enjoy a sumptuous dinner with views of the golden glow of Halong Bay as the sun sets.

Accommodation: Heritage Line - Ginger ( 1 night )
Day 9-11

Hue

This morning after a breakfast with a view of Halong Bay, your driver will take you to Hanoi in time to catch your flight to the city of Hue. Delve into the culture of this fascinating city, teeming with exquisite temples, elegant palaces and ancient tombs. On your one full day here, you will have a highly knowledgeable private guide to explore the most intriguing cultural and historic sites; wander through the immaculate gardens along the Perfume River to the tomb of the Emperor Minh Mang, with its elaborate architecture and sublime forest setting. Marvel at the Forbidden Purple City within the Imperial Citadel. You will board an extravagant dragon boat down the Perfume River and your senses will be tantalised as you float past aromatic flowers and foliage. After each day exploring this city you will relax and indulge at Azerai La Residence hotel, overlooking the Perfume River.

Accommodation: AZERAI - La Residence Hue ( 2 nights )
Day 11-14

Saigon

Leaving Hoi An, it’s a short drive to Danang where you will catch a flight down to Ho Chi Minh City. This city is an energetic modern metropolis, yet as you traverse the streets you will see a scattering of colonial buildings and ancient temples. You will be based at the Liberty Central Riverside Hotel, just moments from the buzzing food scene of Hoi Chi Minh. You will have a memorable night out here as you sip a cocktail on a trendy rooftop, overlooking the dazzling lights of the city, or enjoy a sophisticated jazz bar.  Ho Chi Minh is the gateway into further afield exploration. Your guide will enlighten you on the tactics used during the America-Vietnam war in the notorious Cu Chui Tunnels, and you’ll have the opportunity to delve into this network of underground tunnels.

Accommodation: Liberty Central Riverside Hotel ( 3 nights )
Day 14-15

Mekong Delta

Today you will head two and half hours by road to Cai Be and then board the Bassac Boat and explore the vibrant Mekong Delta. As you leave Cai Be and drift down the Delta you will watch a sea of gleaming green paddy fields, villagers selling their goods on the stalls lining the waterways and children cycling home from school. You will spend the night aboard the same boat and enjoy sundowners as you watch the bronze glow of the sunset.

The following morning you will continue to Can Tho, the commercial hub of the delta. Here you will transfer to a local, smaller boat so that you can explore the Cai Rang, the largest floating market in the Mekong Delta. This is a colourful and visually striking market and for any keen photographers its there are endless photo opportunities, so we recommend you get here early in the morning to avoid the crowds of tourists bustling in. There is a bridge here that serves as a great vantage point so you can watch the local women selling exotic fruits and produce, weaving around the mass of tiny wooden canoes. After your action-packed morning, your driver will be waiting to take you to the airport for your onward domestic flight.

Accommodation: Bassac Boat ( 1 night )
Day 15-19

Phu Quoc

After this incredibly diverse and eventful trip, you will sink into tranquillity on the idyllic island of Phu Quoc, staying La Veranda, which has a tropical beach location. The next five days are at your own pace and leisure. Snorkel along the coral reefs and lose yourself in the tranquillity of the ocean, enjoy a delectable seafood lunch on the island of Gam Ghi that has been freshly prepared by your very own personal chef or trek through the lush forests of the national park, spotting wildlife along the way. The choice is yours.

Accommodation: La Veranda ( 4 nights )
