Best Time to Visit the Polar Region
The Polar Regions are off limits during their respective winter seasons where ice is thick, and access for cruise ships is impossible.
For Antarctica, the season opens from November when the summer begins, and the ice starts to recede and closes towards the end of March when the ice begins to advance once again. In the Arctic, high summer from June to July is considered the prime time for wildlife viewing, but the region is open until late September for exploration.
Antarctica is the world’s coldest, windiest and driest continent. During the summer months the winds abate considerably, and the weather is surprisingly comfortable, averaging between –6 and 10°c. Summertime also means 18-24 hours of sunlight allowing extensive exploration trips.
Arctic cruising has a very specific season due to the sea ice; all expedition cruises depart from July through to September and therefore do not sail in the winter months. The Arctic Circle can see summer temperatures vary between -10°c and 10°c
