A long-tail motorboat makes for an exciting journey to Sagar, a slow-paced traditional village at the far southern edge of Inle Lake. The leisurely boat trip takes around three hours, passing green mountains, small villages and fishermen on the water.  At Sagar, the iconic ‘sunken’ stupas, dating back to the 16th century are an absolute marvel. At certain times of year, the water level rises thus partially submerging the 108 stupas. It is possible to go ashore, walking through the compound and its neighbouring village, to photograph them and get a closer look. The nearby Thaya Gone tribal area is also a region famous for its homemade rice wine, and offers the chance to climb to a hilltop for sweeping views of the lake. Also worth visiting is Sae Khaung, offering an insight into a trade of a different kind, pottery.  Underground kilns and traditional tools are used to make the local oil and water pots. Finally, Tar Kaung, is another top sight on this tour, showcasing a series of more than 200 stunning stupas.
