Rwanda can be visited at any time of year. There are two annual rainy seasons: the long rains which last from mid-February to the beginning of June, and the short rains from mid-September to mid-December. Rainfall, especially over the mountains, is heavy during these two periods, particularly from March to May. The long dry season, June to September, is the best time for tracking gorillas in the Volcanoes National Park although their habitat is a rainforest and it can rain or be misty any day of the year, so it's best to be prepared for this.
Gishwati Lodge is a new rustic eco-lodge due to open in 2020 in western Rwanda, offering access into the relatively unexplored and biodiverse Gishwati and Mukura forests. Search for chimpanzees, golden monkeys and other wildlife.
The relatively unknown Gishwati Forest in western Rwanda is home to a vast diversity of flora and fauna, including semi-habituated chimpanzees, golden monkeys, L'Hoest's monkeys, red river hogs and serval. The area has shrunk in size due to human pressures when areas were deforested to make way for farmland, but in recent years projects to reforest and protect the area's biodiversity have been put in place.
Wilderness Safaris, who own and operate numerous luxurious and adventure camps and lodges throughout Southern Africa are working with the local community and organisations to put Gishwati back on the map by building a new safari lodge. It will have six rustic cottages and form a base for exploring this unique region on chimpanzee-tracking walks as well as other guided nature walks. The lodge will be adventurous rather than overtly luxurious, with a focus on the spirit of exploration and the opportunity to be part of an ambitious conservation effort.
All revenues generated from the forest activities will go towards the creation of the new Gishwati-Mukura National Park which hopes to link the two forest ecosystems with a wildlife corridor, allowing movement of wildlife and a wider area of protection for a range of animals, birds, insects and plants.
Located in western Rwanda with access to both the Gishwati and Mukura forests which are being linked to form a wildlife corridor and a new national park, Gishwati-Mukura National Park. The area is home to chimpanzees, golden monkeys, colobus monkeys and a whole host of other fauna, flora and birdlife.
