Seeing snow for the first time at age five was pure magic, and it sparked my lifelong love for travel. Since then, I’ve made it a personal goal to explore at least one new country every year. I’ve been fortunate to experience many dream adventures: chasing the Northern Lights and snowmobiling in Iceland, spotting wildlife in South Africa, climbing Tiger’s Nest in Bhutan, learning the art of winemaking in Italy, and even catching a glimpse of a Geisha in Japan. As someone who loves food, I enjoy discovering local cuisines, flavors, and the stories behind them. For me, travel isn’t just about visiting places - it’s about tasting, feeling, and truly experiencing the world.

Why Visit Kyoto?

While Tokyo offers a taste of the future, Kyoto opens a window onto the past. As the country’s former imperial capital, it remains quintessentially traditional and a place where centuries of heritage still shape local life. Pairing Kyoto with Tokyo adds depth and perspective to your holiday, revealing two very different sides of Japan in a single trip.

Temples and Spiritual Heritage

Kyoto is home to over 2,000 temples and shrines, from well-known landmarks to quieter, less-visited sites.

  • Fushimi Inari Taisha – Follow a 4 km trail of vermilion torii gates winding through forested slopes on Mount Inari, one of Kyoto’s most recognisable shrines.
  • Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) – A stunning site, Kinkaku-ji features upper floors covered in gold leaf and its design later inspired Ginkaku-ji (the Silver Pavilion) along the Philosopher’s Path.
  • Kiyomizu-dera – Named the “Pure Water Temple”, you can see Kyoto from the temple’s wooden stage and a unique view of Koyasu Pagoda set against the hillside.

Geisha Culture and Historic Districts

Kyoto’s historic districts and sites reflect its past as the former capital, where traditions remain part of daily life.

  • Gion Geisha District – Walk through Kyoto’s best-known geisha district, where you may spot geiko and maiko along the popular Hanami-dori high street.
  • Higashiyama Historic District – One of Kyoto’s best-preserved historic areas, with sloping streets lined with shops, cafés and small restaurants near Kiyomizu-dera.
  • Nijo Castle – Tour the former shogun residence, known for its “nightingale floors” designed as a simple yet ingenious alert system to detect intruders.

Gardens and Seasonal Beauty

Experience timelessly beautiful nature preserves and zen gardens at some of Kyoto’s best places to watch the seasons change.

  • Arashiyama Bamboo Grove – One of Japan’s most photographed spots, walk among paths surrounded by towering bamboo stalks.
  • Philosopher’s Path – Follow this canal-side route in northern Higashiyama, particularly popular during cherry blossom season.
  • Ryoan-ji Zen Garden – View one of Japan’s most famous zen rock gardens, where carefully placed stones rise from artfully raked rows of fine pebbles.

Traditional Experiences

Experience Japanese cultural traditions and arts that are still at the heart of life in Kyoto.

  • Tea ceremony in Gion – Sit with a maiko in Kyoto’s Gion district and learn the etiquette of a traditional tea ceremony, including the preparation and serving of matcha and sweets.
  • Traditional performances – Watch dance performances by geiko or maiko in Gion, or attend a kabuki show at the historic Minamiza Theatre.
  • Nishiki Market – Visit “Kyoto’s Kitchen” where you can explore stalls selling everything from street food to local produce to high-quality Japanese chef’s knives.

FAQs About Our Luxury Kyoto Holidays

  • How many days should I spend in Kyoto?

Plan to spend at least three to four days in Kyoto to explore its key districts, temples and cultural sites. This gives you plenty of time to visit highlights such as Arashiyama’s bamboo grove, Gion’s geisha district and Higashiyama’s historic streets, while also leaving room for day trips to nearby Nara.

  • What is the best time of year to visit Kyoto?

Like much of Japan, spring (March to April) and autumn (October to November) offer the most comfortable weather and seasonal scenery, from cherry blossoms to autumn foliage.

    For season specific highlights:

    • March to April for cherry blossoms – Cool and comfortable temperatures with peak bloom across Kyoto and wider Honshu, drawing visitors to parks, temples and historic districts.
    • June to August heat and rain – Expect hot and humid weather with rain from June to July. We don’t often recommend travel this time of year, but visitors in July can attend the Gion Matsuri, the city’s biggest festival of the year.
    • October to November autumn foliage – Clear days and cooler evenings as leaves turn across the city, with notable views from temples like Kiyomizu-dera and areas such as Arashiyama.

There are also busy periods to be mindful of when travelling around Kyoto:

    • Peak cherry blossom season (March–April) – One of the most in-demand times to visit, with large crowds gathering at temples, gardens and along canal paths. While it’s a bucket list moment to attend, booking is required at least a year in advance.
    • Golden Week (late April–early May) – A series of national holidays in Japan can mean crowded attractions and limited availability for hotels and transportation
    • Peak autumn foliage season (October to November) – Second only to cherry blossom season, this period can be especially crowded as visitors arrive to see the changing leaves across the city’s temples and surrounding hills.

  • How to get from Tokyo to Kyoto?

The fastest and most convenient way to travel from Tokyo to Kyoto is by Shinkansen (bullet train), which can transport you between the cities in just over two hours. Trains run frequently between both cities, and your Scott Dunn travel specialist can handle reservations to simplify your journey.
