The hotel has been fully restored to its former glory
A true labour of love, Brijrama Palace dates back to the 18th century and has been artfully restored to offer guests an opportunity to stay in a slice of regal history on the banks of one of the world’s most famous rivers. Sailing into the hotel by boat gives a taste of the experience to come, along with the carved pillars and Persian rugs of the lobby.
The historic details and antique-style furniture of the 32 rooms and suites combine with modern amenities, including air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs and tea and coffee facilities, to create a comfortable home-from-home. Elegant marble bathrooms offer a bath or shower while robes, slippers and fluffy towels are a welcome sight after a day of strolling around Varanasi’s colourfully chaotic streets. With views out over the waters of the holy River Ganges and its cacophony of life, the hotel’s two restaurants, Darbhanga and Kamalya are beautiful and atmospheric spots to enjoy delicious local and international dishes. Traditional and ancient recipes at Darbhanga echo the heritage of the surrounds that include delicate frescos and restored ceilings while Kamalya Café & Terrace serves teas, coffees and street food-inspired dishes with an al fresco dining option on the terrace. Stepping from the hotel into the colourful melange of Varanasi’s ghats brings you directly into the hub of life that swirls around the waters of the revered Ganges. The ghats are at their most vivid in the early morning and evening and a boat ride at this time is a chance to observe the rituals and pujas of the worshippers as the heady aroma of incense drifts out with the chants of the priests and the smoke of their lamps.
