High in the Avenue of the Volcanoes, Riobamba combines its colonial past with an older, more colourful indigenous heritage that remains in the vibrant markets. Dotted throughout the narrow lanes of the historic heart of the city, baroque churches and grand plazas hint at the former Spanish colonists, though the streets now ring with an altogether livelier ambience.
