Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

The best time of year to visit Panama is typically from December/January to April. The rainy season runs from May to December and tropical downpours can be torrential, so always pack good waterproofs if going at this time of year. Sunshine levels are highest in the winter months from January to April.

Costa Rica’s tropical coastal areas are warm and humid throughout the year. Much of Costa Rica is covered by rainforest so expect rain at any time, but the drier season on the Pacific coast is from December to April and the rainier ‘green’ season is from May to November with the heaviest rainfall being in September and October. Christmas, New Year and Easter are incredibly popular so it is best to book well in advance.

Itinerary

Experience the perfect blend of history, culture, wildlife and adventure as you travel through Panama and Costa Rica. Journey past towering volcanoes, through forests rich in biodiversity teeming with unique flora and fauna and visit one of the greatest feats of human engineering, the Panama Canal.

  1. Fly to Panama City

  2. Days 1-4: Panama City

Upon arrival in Panama City you will be met and transferred to your stylish landmark hotel, located in Casco Viejo (the lovingly restored colonial part of town), now a UNESCO World Heritage site. On your doorstep you’ll find photogenic cobbled streets and plazas, outdoor cafés, buzzing independent restaurants and atmospheric jazz bars. The following morning after a delicious breakfast, embark on a guided tour of the capital’s highlights, learning about its fascinating rich history and cultural influences. Begin with a stop at the Miraflores Locks to witness the huge vessels passing through the Canal and spend a little time at the Visitor Centre which gives you a deeper insight into its construction and its economic importance to the country. Visit the ruins of Panama Viejo, founded in 1519 and destroyed by pirates in 1671 and later enjoy gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean with a surreal backdrop modern Panama City’s towering skyline.

You also have the option of a truly unforgettable, bucket list adventure, navigating through the Panama Canal! You will be taken to the marina where a shared boat will be waiting for you, along with a private guide to ensure a wholly personalised experience. The direction of travel will depend on the day of the week, but either way you will pass through a series of impressive locks and experience a unique insight into one of the world's greatest engineering feats. Have your camera ready as sailing through the world’s largest man-made lake (Gatún) is also rewarding from a wildlife perspective with plenty of birdlife to spot. Once you disembark the boat, you’ll be transferred back to your hotel in time to enjoy the rest of the afternoon at leisure.

Accommodation: American Trade Hotel (3 nights)

  3. Days 4-6: Boquete

After breakfast you’ll wave goodbye to the city as you take the short flight over to David and then transfer onto Boquete in the Chiriquí highlands. Your comfortable mountain lodge and home for the next two nights is located at the foot of Baru Volcano (Panama’s highest peak) and is the perfect base for exploring the surrounding cloud forests. The cool mountain air, hills shrouded in a lingering mist, forests dripping in mosses and bubbling rivers merge to create a beautiful natural landscape.

There are a plethora of activities available in the area; including trekking, river-rafting, ziplining, canopy walkways and visits to coffee plantations. Birdwatching opportunities in the area are excellent, offering high chances of seeing the resplendent quetzal and the hotel’s gardens are abundant with tropical flowers making it an ideal spot to observe hummingbirds. We have included a guided walk along trails through the cloud forest, hugging rivers and valleys and culminating in a spectacular waterfall where you can take a refreshing shower and cool off in the natural pool (a picnic lunch is also included).

Along with all the outdoor activities, the property has a first-class spa for those of you yearning for a bit of pampering. The onsite restaurant is also renowned for its gourmet cuisine, with Condé Nast Traveller recommending it as one of the best in Central America. You can even participate in a cooking class where you’ll learn to prepare delectable local dishes such as empanadas and cassava.

Accommodation: Panamonte Inn & Spa (2 nights)

  4. Days 6-9: Golfo Dulce, Costa Rica

Today your adventure continues as you travel overland to the tropical, low-lying region of Golfito across the border in Costa Rica. The transfer should take around three hours (depending on border traffic) and you’ll have to hop onboard a small boat for the final section of the journey to get to your secluded eco-lodge, surrounded by the Piedras Blancas National Park. Playa Cativo Lodge is an exclusive beachfront property, offering unparalleled experiences and a blissful balance between relaxation and adventure. Set amongst 1,000 acres of private rainforest, its wooden plantation-style design harmoniously compliments the lush vegetation and natural surroundings of the jungle.

Expert guides are on hand at the lodge to help organise a variety of thrilling ocean and rainforest encounters. Enjoy wonderful hiking opportunities, exploring virgin rainforest and pristine waterfalls. Networks of trails in nearly every direction from the lodge are waiting for your discovery. The flora and fauna of Piedras Blancas National Park is among the richest on the planet. It is very similar to the nearby Corcovado National Park but less travelled. The different eco-systems, including mangroves, allow you to observe a large and diverse variety of birds and animals in a relatively small area and it’s common to see and hear howler and white-faced monkeys and screeching macaws around the lodge.

Other activities on offer include fishing, kayaking, whale and dolphin watching boat tours, nocturnal rainforest expeditions, snorkelling and stand up paddle boarding. The exclusive sandy beach beside the lodge is a wonderful place to relax, as is the inviting fresh-water swimming pool with its huge terrace where you can enjoy evening cocktails and unforgettable sunsets over the Golfo Dulce.

Accommodation: Playa Cativo Lodge (3 nights)

  5. Days 9-13: Manuel Antonio National Park

There’s time to squeeze in one last stop on this fabulous itinerary. Continue overland towards Manuel Antonio National Park, home to paradisiacal beaches and rocky outcrops backed by lush rainforest and unusual flora and fauna. Your luxurious hideaway, Arenas del Mar, is nestled within 11 acres of tropical rainforest and has its very own network of nature trails, including a hanging bridge and access to two gorgeous sandy beaches. With two swimming pools, sun loungers down on the beach and a spa with a variety of treatments on offer, the hotel is well equipped to help you enjoy your final few days of holiday.

However, given its exclusive location and close proximity to Manuel Antonio National Park, it would be a shame not to spend a few more moments exploring this diverse area. We have included a guided tour of the national park, where sightings of sloths are near on guaranteed (if you’re lucky you might spot one in the grounds of your hotel too!) Your eagle-eyed guide will point out even the best camouflaged creatures from within the dense foliage as you make your way through a series of trails, and with the help of a telescope you’ll be able to get a real closeup! If you’re still yearning for more thrills and adventures, other activities include white-water rafting, mangrove kayaking and boat tours to spot whales and dolphins, catch and release sport fishing, canopy and zipline tours, surfing and horseback riding along the beach. With plenty of restaurants and bars within easy reach, you’re not confined to your hotel so make the most of your last few days.

Whether you are relaxing down on the beach with the palm trees gently swaying in the wind or looking out from the hotel’s infinity pool, the view of the ocean crashing against the rocks is spectacular and as the sun begins to melt into the horizon, creating purple and orange hues, what better way to toast an unforgettable trip then with a masterfully created tropical cocktail?

Accommodation: Arenas del Mar (4 nights)

  6. Fly home from San Jose

Make the most of your last day, enjoy a leisurely breakfast and a final swim, before transferring to the international airport to check in for your flight home.
