Average time to visit

This hilly country is hot throughout the year and the only relief from the high temperatures and humidity is to be found up in the highlands, where conditions are cooler and crisper, especially at night. Rainfall in Panama is very heavy on the Pacific coast and less so (but still substantial) in the lowlands of the Caribbean coast. The rainy season runs from May to December and downpours can be torrential, so always pack good waterproofs if going at this time of year. Sunshine levels are highest in the winter months (January to April), so this is a good time to visit, especially if you can stay in the hills where the air is fresher.

Sarah Lowe (Staff)

If you are looking to fully immerse yourself in the history and culture of Panama City then look no further than the Casco Viejo neighbourhood. The whole area is undergoing renovation following years of neglect and we are waiting with baited breath! Characterful boutique hotels such as the gorgeous and very personal Canal House are springing up here and offering guests the opportunity to be in the heart of the action. The Canal House only has three rooms so offers more of a luxury guesthouse experience rather than a full service hotel but I loved the home from home feel and the staff couldnt have been friendlier even those with more limited English.

In a city that is very modern and up and coming (you really can tell there has been huge investment) it was a real treat to be able to explore its past. High rise skyscrapers and crumbling colonial buildings literally rub shoulders. What appealed most about the Casco Viejo is that it has so much character and it is still a little rough round the edges having not been overly restored or overly sanitized. Casco Viejo is in transition and I was glad to be able to see it this way before it becomes too touristy. You can explore on foot and there are cute little bars and restaurants dotted around whereas being based in the high rise downtown area everything is a car journey away and has more of a business feel.

This tiny boutique hotel is one of the many buildings in Casco Viejo that was restored from a dilapidated stone structure to a luxury accommodation. Canal House has an old-world wraparound veranda, exposed brick walls, sleek hardwood floors, plush beds and palm plants that grace every corner.

  • Partial Transit of the Panama Canal

Tropical birds circle overhead and the sound of the rainforest’s wildlife breaks the quiet calm as you make your way along this fantastic canal and engineering marvel. Navigating the Panama Canal is truly unforgettable.
