An Insider's Guide to Northern Patagonia's Best-Kept Secrets

Chilean Patagonia is the ultimate playground for adventurers and nature lovers, where the continent plunges into a spectacular tapestry of glaciers, icebergs, islands, and towering peaks. Long celebrated for its wild, untamed beauty, Patagonia offers experiences that stir the soul and ignite the spirit of exploration.

With more travellers discovering its wonders each year, finding untouched corners of this extraordinary region has become increasingly rare and all the more special. Simon, Latin America Team Lead, recently ventured to Chile to uncover the hidden gems of a lesser-known side of Patagonia, where thrilling adventure and serene seclusion coexist. From remote rivers framed by snow-capped volcanoes to family-run lodges that celebrate nature and connection, he shares the highlights of a journey off the beaten path and away from the crowds— a glimpse of Patagonia in its purest, most awe-inspiring form.

What time of year is best to travel to Northern Patagonia?

Peak season is the summer, December through February. Some activities, like white water rafting, are limited to this season due to river water levels. Shoulder months of late October, November, March and April are excellent for pleasant weather, fewer crowds and the best prices.

What is your top tip for planning a Patagonia adventure?

Give each region the time it deserves. Longer stays allow you to fully experience Patagonia’s vast landscapes and its mix of adventure and quiet moments. Because activities can be quite active, adding in free days to rest allows you to explore at your own pace and soak in the spectacular scenery.

What was one of your favorite adventures on your recent trip?

Rafting the iconic Río Futaleufú was unforgettable. The Class III–IV rapids offered the perfect mix of adrenaline and adventure. It’s easy to see why it’s considered one of the top white-water rafting destinations in the world. For those looking for a more relaxed experience, there are plenty of gentle floating excursions available instead!

What experience captured the beauty of the region?

Kayaking along the river alongside the stunning Vira Vira in Pucón was breathtaking. With snow-capped volcanoes as a backdrop and not another soul in sight, it was total seclusion and gentle adventure and surrounded by the sounds of nature.

And what about a memorable meal or local experience?

Dinner at Bocanariz in Santiago was a standout culinary experience. It’s a trendy wine bar and bistro in the Lastarria neighbourhood, where locals and travellers alike enjoy incredible food, sensational Chilean wines and a buzzing atmosphere.

What was the stand-out hotel or property from your trip and why would our guests love it?

Vira Vira, set in a remote riverside location, is the kind of place where you can completely disconnect from the world and immerse yourself in nature. Unlike the more frequently visited regions of Patagonia that focus mainly on hiking, Vira Vira offers an incredible range of experiences — from mountain biking, horseback riding, rafting, and kayaking to community visits, scenic helicopter flights, and interactive culinary adventures.

There’s genuinely something for everyone, making it ideal for both couples and families of all ages. With multiple daily direct flights between Santiago and Temuco, it’s also one of the most accessible regions of Northern Patagonia, avoiding the otherwise long travel days to the South. The lodge itself is stunning, with exceptional dining, warm service, and expert guides. Truly the whole package.

What’s one insider secret or special experience you’d recommend for guests wanting to see a more authentic side of this destination?

I’d say be sure to time your stay at Refugia Chiloé to include a day aboard the lodge’s private boat, The Williche. This traditional, beautifully crafted wooden vessel, available exclusively to guests, sails to the smaller, lesser-visited islands off Isla Chiloé. It’s an unforgettable way to experience the region’s rich maritime history, encounter local communities, and take in the breathtaking natural beauty that makes this corner of Chile so special.

When should travellers start planning their trip to Patagonia?

Travellers should begin planning their Patagonia trip as early as possible to secure the best lodges and experiences. The most popular regions often book out a year or more in advance, especially for peak summer. While lesser-known regions in Northern Patagonia typically have more flexibility, early planning is still recommended to ensure you make the most of your trip.

Was there someone who made your trip especially memorable?

Marcelo, the owner and manager of the remarkable Pata Lodge in Chile’s Futaleufú region, exudes a palpable passion for preserving and celebrating the natural beauty of the area — a spirit that sits at the very heart of this family-run project.

Marcelo and his family live on-site at the lodge and love connecting with guests, whether on excursions or gathered around the dining table sharing stories. Their warmth and hospitality create a real sense of belonging. Marcelo and his team go above and beyond to make sure every stay feels personal and fulfilling, whether guests come seeking adventure, relaxation, or simply a chance to disconnect from the everyday.

What exciting developments are on the horizon for this region?

At Pata Lodge, an exciting expansion is underway. The team is preparing to open new accommodations on a nearby farm, offering equally breathtaking views of the snow-capped Andes and surrounding rivers. This next chapter will provide even more opportunities for guests to explore this lesser-known side of Chilean Patagonia in true off-the-beaten-path style.

My love of travel started as a 19 year-old, with a 3-month backpacking adventure through South America. I fell in love with the iconic sites such as Machu Picchu and Iguazu Falls, and took every chance to delve into spectacular Andes mountain scenery, both on foot and by mountain bike. As a biology graduate, what excites me most is rich biodiversity and nature. My most memorable experiences are the once-in-a-lifetime wildlife encounters, of which Latin America offers up some of the best in the world. Top of the list for me are snorkelling with playful sealions in the Galapagos Islands and tracking elusive jaguars in Brazil’s Pantanal.
