Arctic cruising has a very specific season due to the sea ice; all expedition cruises depart from July through to September and therefore do not sail in the winter months from November through to June. Temperatures are of the extremes and can be largely variable depending on conditions; the Arctic Circle can see summer temperatures vary between -10°c and 10°c. Southern Greenland and the coast of Labrador in Canada can peak at 16°c whereas deep in the Northwest passage thermometers rise no higher than 5°c.

Itinerary

Fly from London to Toronto
Day 1-20

Arctic

Accommodation: 19 nights

Day 1 :

Overnight in Toronto after your international flight. Spend the day exploring the exciting neighbourhoods, visit the world famous museums such as the ROM and BOCA Shoe Museum. A visit to Toronto would be complete without heading up the CN Tower for aerial views of Lake Ontario which you will soon sail across as you head out into the Arctic.

Day 2 :

After arriving into Toronto, you’ll embark the boat and set sail, beginning a voyage that will take you through some of Canada and Greenland’s most spectacular landscapes, wildlife and historical wonders. Spend some time meeting your fellow travellers and crew as you settle into life onboard the ship.

Day 3 - 5:

Enjoying a picturesque setting on an island in the St Lawrence River, Montreal is a beautiful city, both from the water and up close. Climb Mont Royal to appreciate the grandeur of the Notre-Dame Basilica and the city skyline, their manmade beauty rivalled only by the natural splendour of the Laurentian Mountains that stretch out endlessly, a rich bounty of emerald forests and azure lakes. Discover the winter sports of the Mont Tremblant resort and take a bicycle tour through the city’s street to explore the Old Port and Atwater Market, amongst other fascinating sights in this francophone city.

Day 5 :

As you chart a course northeast your journey brings you to the community of Tadoussac which was founded in 1535, making it Canada’s oldest village. Sailing through the St Lawrence Fjord you may spot fin, blue or humpback whales, though the region is also home to the white beluga whale so keep your binoculars handy as you stand on deck. If energy levels permit, you may like to step ashore to hike the Sentier du Fjord trail, an exquisitely beautiful trail that takes in some of Quebec’s most stunning landscapes.

Day 6 :

As you sail though the Gulf of St Lawrence you have a day to relax and enjoy the beauty of the ocean, the seabirds that follow the ship, and the changing colours of the water and sky that create a spectacular panorama. You could attend a lecture by one of the onboard experts, edit your photos or catch up on the last few days of experiences with the other passengers.

Day 7 :

After a day of leisure, today is a chance to stretch your legs and enjoy the grand beauty of Canada’s great outdoors. After navigating through a passage of the Gulf of St Lawrence, you reach Norris Point, a delightful town in Bonne Bay. From here you can hike into the Gros Morne National Park, exploring the ancient mountains and lush countryside as well as Lobster Cove Head village. You’ll sail through Bonne Bay to admire the imposing Tablelands from the water, past a shoreline dotted with quaint villages, vast fjords and wildlife that includes whales and eagles.

Day 8 - 11:

Labrador’s coastline is a remote and sparsely populated area of captivating scenery and quaint, secluded fishing villages. Discover the region’s history of fishing, one of the few industries possible in this area, as you visit the villages of Battle Harbour and Red Bay. Should the port authority give permission, you could also travel to Rigolet to visit the local Inuit community before continuing on to Hopedale, where the town’s museums offer a fascinating glimpse into the cultural heritage and rich history of the country’s indigenous communities.

Day 11 - 14:

While sailing across the vast sea, you could spend your day trawling through the hundreds of photos you’re likely to have amassed, comparing sightings with the other guests and reflecting back on a voyage of varied and memorable experiences.

Day 14 :

As the lecture series continues you could attend a couple today and learn more about the places, people and wildlife that you have visited and which are still to come on this expedition.

Day 15 - 17:

As you travel through the Hudson Strait, charting a course mapped out by your captain in response to the ice conditions of the region, you should be able to make a handful of shore landings to explore this rugged and remote landscape. Discover an unspoilt and largely untouched coastline on Akpatok Island, keeping an eye out for polar bears that can sometimes be spotted on the rocky shore. Travel in a Zodiac to admire the intriguing geology of the cragged hills of Sugluk Bay and step back in time on Diana Island to imagine the lives of the early pioneers as they braved these austere and seemingly inhospitable shores, home only to musk oxen, reindeer and other Artic wildlife.

Day 17 :

After a busy day, today is an opportunity to take a leisurely cruise around Monumental Island, a beautiful, rugged spot and home to walruses that you might be able to see up close as you travel by Zodiac along the coastline.

Day 18 - 20:

As you sail into the natural harbour of Qeqertarsuaq, you enter a whalebone gateway that gives a hint to the maritime history of the town. With its beautiful harbour and vibrantly painted houses, the town is a delightful place to spend part of your last day, before continuing onto Ilulissat with its ancient settlement of Sermermiut and obscure icebergs. At Disko Bay you may be alerted to a calving glacier by the almighty crack as it plunges into the water in a flash of blue, creating a sea filled with almost ethereal ice sculptures. After visiting Sisimiut you’ll have a chance to bid farewell to your crew and passengers, many of whom are likely to be lifelong friends after a shared adventure of once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Day 20 :

Today you disembark the ship to continue your journey to your next destination.
