Built in 473 by King Kaspaya, Sigiriya Rock Fortress is arguably the most famous heritage site in Sri Lanka. It sits on a huge, solitary rock, rising above surrounding plains.  Besides being a fortress, a palace, gardens and pools were also built on the rock's summit with defensive work around them. The summit can be reached by over 1,000 flight of stairs.
