Good time to visit

Average time to visit

For the warmest temperatures of the year and most hours of sunshine visit Ålesund and the surrounds during the summer months of May through to August. September is a charming time to visit too with the beginning of the stunning Fall colors and when the region is slightly less busy.

For skiing, February to April is the best time for snow and daylight hours.

Add a little culture to your trip, with a visit to the fascinating Art Nouveau center in Ålesund

We design each itinerary around you, so this suggested itinerary is a starting point that we can tweak or transform into something completely bespoke to you. Call us on 858 345 1764 to start planning your vacation.

For something exhilarating and off the beaten track, head to Norway's north west coast to explore Ålesund, its surrounding fjords and the stunning Sunnmøre Alps by boat, car, helicopter and of course on foot! Beginning in Oslo this itinerary gives the perfect combination of both a city and active trip, where you can delve into the culture of Viking Norway.

  1. Fly to Oslo

  2. Days 1-3: Oslo

You'll start your week in Oslo, the charming capital city of Norway, built around the water’s edge against the backdrop of lush surrounding hills. Oslo has a cosmopolitan vibe and seamlessly blends modern and classic architecture. A fantastic way to explore the city is by bike and we have included a guided bicycle tour which will allow you to head down small streets discovering hidden locations and local hideouts. After, you might like to take a stroll through Vigeland Sculpture park where you can meander among 212 bronze and granite statues.

    Accommodation: The Thief (2 nights)

  3. Days 3-5: Alesund & West Coast Fjords

A short 55-minute domestic flight takes you into the heart of Norway’s western Fjords as you touch down in Ålesund. Ålesund is a beautiful waterfront city which was almost entirely burnt to the ground at the beginning of the 1900s and was re-built influenced by German Art Nouveau style with colorful pastel-colored buildings. From Ålesund you can indulge in a number of activities focusing on the beautiful fjords and mountains that surround the city.

We suggest hopping in a RIB and heading out to Runde Island on a sea safari in the hope of spotting puffins and seals in their natural habitats. After, you can spend the afternoon getting to know the charming city of Ålesund; amble along the cobbled streets and admire the famed Art Nouveau style, get your hiking legs warmed up with a long march up the 418 steps to the Aksla viewpoint where you can take in the panoramic view of the city, its archipelago and the Sunnmøre Alps; or head out to the open air Sunnmøre Museum for an insight into the culture and history of Sunnmøre before going back to your hotel for some relaxation and another delicious dinner.

    Accommodation: Hotel Brosundet (2 nights)

  4. Days 5-8: Norwegian Fjords

Your last stop will be the wonderful Storfjord Hotel whose inviting sofas by the roaring open fires will make you never want to leave!

We've included a private boat trip to the astounding Geirangerfjord; a UNESCO World Heritage Site home to the Seven Sisters, The Suitor, and the Bridal Veil waterfalls as well as the infamous Golden Route - Norway's best-known stretch of road consisting of 11 hairpin bends and surrounded by the dramatic scenery of the Rauma district. After a change of transport, you'll experience the fjord from the water as you sail between the rising mountains. If you have time in the afternoon, Geiranger offers a number of hiking opportunities; The Bishop, The King and The Queen are worth a go and you'll notice the difference in the landscape here which is somewhat austere and completely striking.

Later on, take a delicious picnic and get suited and booted for some kayaking on Glomset Bay, admiring the clear waters and soaring mountains before settling in front of the fire with a book.

The next day challenge yourself to a full day of hiking in the stunning Sunnmøre Alps and work up an appetite for another mouth-watering 3-course dinner.

For a change of pace, why not spend an afternoon at a local farm and discover old Norwegian cooking techniques and traditions. The farm grows all of its own food, so you'll be using the freshest ingredients to cook up a storm.

After one last day of hiking, kayaking or just some well-earned relaxing it's time to head home, hopefully feeling rejuvenated and re-energised after a week in the fjords, full of fresh air and delicious food!

    Accommodation: Storfjord Hotel (3 nights)

  5. Fly home from Ålesund

  • Kayaking on Hjørundfjord

Head south of Ålesund to Hjørundfjord and explore its beautiful scenery with your private instructor leading the way. As you paddle along the calm waters, admire the incredible views of the surrounding mountains from this unique perspective.

  • Oslo highlights biking tour

See Oslo from a different perspective by bike, following a path alongside the Akerselva River, stopping at the heart of Oslo’s food scene, the indoor market; Mathallen.

  • Storfjord local food farm tour

Discover local traditions and food culture at a charming and authentic fjord farm, close to Storfjord Hotel. Try local produce and taste traditional Norwegian dishes courtesy of your hosts, as they tell you about life on their farm.

  • Wildlife RIB Sea Safari

An exciting safari on a RIB boat out to sea to Runde Island to see seals and puffins in their natural habitat. Experience the dramatic coastline at high speed on the open boat!
