The climate in New Zealand is incredibly pleasant, with warm and balmy summers and cold crisp winter months with wonderful clear, blue skies. The warmer high-season months of November to April are perfect for outdoor exploration. The colder months of June to August are the best time to ski.

Both North and South Islands are drier on the east coast, rather than on the west, where mountain ranges act as a trap for the moisture-rich winds from the Tasman Sea. It is also worth remembering that it is usually a few degrees cooler on the South Island than the North Island and as New Zealand has a maritime climate, the weather can change rapidly.

Insider's View

To my utter delight I spent a very enjoyable ride in a lift with 4 of the All Blacks rugby team, only to then see the entire team waiting in the lobby!

With an array of buzzing bars to choose from, make the most of the nightlife in Wellington as its one of the best places to have a dance in New Zealand. Its one of the less sleepy towns to pick from!

Enjoy an early evening drink in one of the vibrant bars on the water-front to soak up the atmosphere on the city. On a warm evening, you can even bag yourself a beanbag, for a drink in the sun.

Brilliantly located in the stylish part of this windy city, the Inter-Continental is an excellent place to base yourself during your stay in Wellington. The rooms have recently undergone a full refurbishment, so are equipped with modern amenities and new interiors. There are a variety of room types, but I would recommend opting for the Club Suites, to make your stay that little bit more effortless. These benefit from the use of the Club Lounge, where you can enjoy breakfast and early evening canopes & drinks, among other things. There are also Harbour View Rooms, which really help soak up the atmosphere of the sea facing city. For a large city hotel, the service is remarkably personal and the management take a keen interest in their guests enjoyment. It has a definite buzz to it and you are in a great position to stroll out to local restaurants on the harbor, or visit local boutique shops.

With only a couple of hotel options in Wellington, although the InterContinental seems to be almost full most nights with 240 rooms, they manage to give each guests the attention and personal assistance they would expect and indeed deserve. This is sometimes harder to achieve in a city hotel. The whole hotel has been recently refurbished and has every amenity you might need, including a remote phone and automatic blinds when you step into the Club category. Its most definitely worth option for the Club category as the club lounge is incredibly relaxing for breakfast, is undoubtedly less busy than the main restaurant and has undisturbed views of Wellington Harbour.

Despite being a larger city hotel in the heart of downtown Wellington, the Intercontinental boasts some of the most wonderful views out over the waterfront and the Harbour.

All rooms are decorated in a contemporary style, as you would expect from any city hotel but are extremely comfortable. I would always recommend the club rooms and suites as they are on the 8th and 9th floors, with incredible views over the harbor that more than make up for not being a boutique option. The hotel is also moments away from the shopping hub of Lambton Quay and the vibrant bars and restaurants of Courtenay Place.
