Discover Cong

Famed as the setting for John Ford’s 1952 Oscar-winning film, The Quiet Man, starring John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara and Barry Fitzgerald, Cong has changed little since the 1950s, and a tour of Cong will take you to many of the sites from the movie such as Danaghers Pub, the dying man’s house, Pat Cohan’s Bar and many more. There is also a small Quiet Man Museum in the village.
Cong’s highlight is a fine ruined medieval abbey that is certainly worth exploring. Said to be the final resting place of Rory O’Connor, the last High King of Ireland, the abbey has at various times in its long history been a hospital, refuge for the poor and a place of scholastic brilliance.
