Shanghai and eastern China’s subtropical climate brings with it four distinct seasons. The weather is generally mild and temperate, with a great deal of rainfall even in the drier months of the year. The frequent monsoon showers and scorching temperatures of June, July and August can make it uncomfortably humid, with the mercury regularly rising over 35°C. Winter is overcast and chilly, although snow seldom falls in this eastern region of China. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best times to visit Shanghai and eastern China, with pleasant temperatures and fewer tourists.

Description
Located at the heart of Shanghai’s historic Dazhongli neighborhood, the Middle House is a chic, urban hideaway that provides a calm, sophisticated sanctuary amidst the hustle and bustle of lively Shanghai.
Built in the Shikumen style, blending distinct Shanghainese elements with a contemporary aesthetic, the Middle House is the latest member of The House Collective, a small group up elegant, boutique-style hotels located in some of China’s most exciting cities. With its close proximity to The Bund and People’s Square, the Middle House is located right at the heart of the action, as its name suggests, providing welcome tranquillity and elegance from the energetic Shanghai streets.
With cool, clean lines and muted tones, the interiors are luxe and sophisticated without being brash, with a touch of Italianate glamour added by the glittering Moreno glass chandelier in the lobby. Split across the two towers of the hotel, the Middle House’s 111 rooms are each named after their requisite square meterage, starting with Studio 50 and increasing in size and opulence through to the Studio 90, and beyond to the capacious Suites. Dark, wooden floors contrast with otherwise white and taupe colored walls and linens, offset by the occasional pop of color, giving a feel of Oriental minimalism. The bathrooms are luxurious and spacious, with deep soak tubs, granite sinks and huge rain shower, all walled with glass and completed with Bamford amenities. Despite their pared back approach to décor, the rooms are packed with technology, a complimentary ‘maxi bar’ that can be tailored to individual tastes and requirements and spacious wardrobes that house yoga mats and free weights.
Despite the Middle House’s proximity to Shanghai’s many world-class restaurants, the hotel has created a dining scene all of its own. Café Gray Deluxe, the brain child of New York chef Gray Kunz and sister restaurant for the eponymously named Café Grey Deluxe at the Upper House in Hong Kong, is the destination for a world-class breakfast and an elegant, considered a la carte menu throughout the day. For some authentic Chinese cuisine, Sui Tang Li showcases the diverse and delicious cuisine from across China, including Cantonese and Sichuan delicacies served alongside local Shanghainese fare, all accompanied by an impressive wine list. At Frasca, modern Italian cuisine is served in homely, relaxed surroundings, opening out onto a beautiful outdoor courtyard. Down in the basement, the hotel’s Mi Xun Spa houses a 33-meter heated swimming pool, 24-hour gym with HYPOXI treatment room, yoga studio, sauna and steam room – perfect for some pampering after exploring the dynamic city of Shanghai.
