Itinerary

Discover the understated charm of Uruguay on this easy-going classic self-drive itinerary. At your own pace take in the sights and sounds of Uruguay’s bucolic countryside whilst staying at traditional estancias, visit the country’s vibrant urban areas, and enjoy its gorgeous rugged unspoilt coastline.

  1. Fly to Buenos Aires

  2. Days 1-3: Buenos Aires

Arriving in Buenos Aires, you will be met and transferred to your hotel in the heart of Palermo, the city’s most trendy neighbourhood. Step outside your hotel and you’ll find some of the hippest restaurants and wine bars, or head into the vibrant city centre to discover the capital’s iconic landmarks, grand museums and side streets brimming with local charm and the odd open-air tango performance.

    Accommodation: CasaSur Palermo (2 nights)

  3. Days 3-5: Colonia del Sacramento

The following morning, you’ll hop onboard a ferry for the short trip across to Uruguay, where your introduction to this charming laidback country is Colonia Del Sacramento, a UNESCO world heritage site. Stroll through the cobbled streets of this picturesque photogenic town whilst admiring the colonial architecture of its buildings and enjoy leisurely lunches out on its leafy plazas.

    Accommodation: Charco Hotel (2 nights)

  4. Days 5-7: Montevideo

After breakfast, jump in your rental car and head towards the capital, arriving at your boutique hotel in one of the city’s most exclusive neighbourhoods just in time for lunch. There’s plenty to see and do in Montevideo, we recommend visiting the buzzing port market where you can feast on juicy cuts of meats grilled in front of you. There are also a number of fascinating museums, namely the Carnival Museum (which depicts Montevideo’s less famous but by no means less raucous celebrations to rival Rio’s) and the Andes Museum (which vividly recalls a tragic plane crash and the harrowing tale of its survivors).

Accommodation: Alma Histórica Boutique Hotel (2 nights)

  5. Days 7-10: Jose Ignacio

It’s an easy drive along the coast from Montevideo to the charming seaside village of Jose Ignacio. This hip little place offers a great escape from city life, where you can enjoy spectacular golden beaches, sunny coastal walks and some fantastic dining options with views out over the Atlantic Ocean. We’ve chosen a cool little hotel that serves you a delicious breakfast wherever you’d like to take it each morning, and there are complimentary bikes to help you explore the scenic coastline.

Accommodation: Posada del Faro (3 nights)

  6. Days 10-13: Uruguayan Countryside

You’ll notice the roads are even quieter and the scenery more spectacular as you drive from Jose Ignacio towards Rocha and your final destination at Estancia El Charbaon. As one of our favourite spots in Uruguay, we think you’ll love being encompassed by Uruguay’s rolling countryside and the surrounding lagoons teeming with wildlife. Over the next few days, you’ll have plenty of opportunity for horse-riding, birdwatching or hiking. We also recommend you venture out to visit one of the nearby beaches of La Pedrera or La Paloma or for a little adventure head to Cabo Polonio’s famous sand dunes and sealion colony. In the evening, back at the estancia, you’ll enjoy mouth-watering homecooked meals which are best accompanied by a bottle of the region’s fabulous wine, whilst you share stories with other guests or cosy up beside the roaring open fire.

Accommodation: Estancia El Charabon (3 nights)

  7. Fly home

After a final delicious breakfast, begin your drive back to Montevideo where you will drop off your hire car and check-in at the airport for your return flight home.
