From May to August the Yala monsoon brings rain to the island’s southwestern half, which is generally driest between September and April. However, an inter-monsoonal period in October and November means short sharp rain can occur in many parts of the island. From May to October the eastern and northern regions of Sri Lanka tend to experience the best weather. The sea stays at around 27°C all year.

Thotalagala is a former 19th century plantation bungalow which has been lovingly converted into a luxurious boutique hotel in the east of the hill country.

Set in the heart of a tea plantation estate, originally planted by Sir Thomas Lipton of Lipton tea, Thotalagala enjoys spectacular views over the Hill Country and thanks to its eastern location, normally enjoys fantastic weather during June, July and August - which is unusual for Sri Lanka's hills. The property lies in the Haputale Escarpment, a perfect stop between Kandy and Sri Lanka's southern national parks such as Yala and Uda Walawe.

The bungalow, that dates back to the 1870s, is home to seven beautifully and traditionally designed fan-cooled suites that are perfectly in-keeping with the wonderful colonial heritage of the building. Think polished wooden floors, antique furniture and large comfortable beds that are surrounded by original pictures and photographs of the area. Each room is named after British gentlemen that played a huge part in the development of tea growing in Sri Lanka.

Spend time here enjoying breakfast on the lawn, gourmet barbeques, picnic breakfasts and simply enjoying a book overlooking the spectacular views. Alternatively head out on foot, as the area is fantastic for trekking, hiking and bird watching.

Thotalagala really impressed me throughout my stay there. On arrival you can't help but walk as fast as you can to the front of the bungalow to see the absolutely incredible views. Unlike other places in the hill country, Thotalagala is on the eastern tip of the mountain range which means that you have views right down to the valley floor (1600metres below!). It's been said on a clear day you can see Yala National Park and even the south coast! The bungalow had a modern, luxurious look to it whilst keeping a colonial charm with pieces of traditional furniture and colourful wall paper. I stayed in the Thomas Lipton suite which is highly recommend, although there really isn't any bad rooms. The hotel lends itself best for those looking to relax however there is an array of walks / treks nearby which are quite challenging. I took on the 4km loop as a run at 6:30am which was challenging to say the least. There's also a tea plantation and factory close by which is definitely worth checking out - this nicely mixes with taking high tea and Mr Liptons old residence which is just down from the factory. They are just in the process of installing a new infinity pool which will make it a front runner in the leading, boutique hotels in the hill country!

A fantastic hidden gem set against the most spectacular backdrop above the clouds. Enjoy afternoon tea in Sir Lipton's former bungalow and rise early to see one of the most amazing sunrises ever!

Thotalagala is a 19th century tea planters bungalow amidst 20 acres of manicured gardens. These gardens have been landscaped to mimic the British style gardens that would have been in Sri Lanka two centuries ago. The 145-year old home has been renovated and opened up as a boutique hotel with the concept of taking you back to the colonial era and provides you a home from home feel where the service is personal, flexible and welcoming. Hidden in the hill country, boasting dramatic views and located next to the Dambatenne tea estate where Sir Thomas Lipton planted himself, it serves as a great base to explore the Hill country.
