Good time to visit

Average time to visit

There is no bad time to go on safari in the Kruger National Park. The experience does, however, change from month to month. In the summer months (October to March), it gets very hot. The verdant vistas are all the more spectacular because of the rains, but this means that the foliage is denser, water is more abundant and game is therefore trickier to see. There are lots of beautiful migratory birds during the summer months. While the daytime temperature in the winter months (May to September) is ideal, it does get a little chilly at night and in the early morning.

Insider's View

Take in some of the most stunning views that the Kruger has to offer from your glass-walled room.

To start planning your holiday to Singita Lebombo Lodge

Set over one of Africa's most dramatic landscapes in the eastern Kruger National Park, Singita Lebombo's 13 suites and private villa have all been constructed in the form of huge, spacious glass boxes overlooking the river below.

The 33,000 acre Lebombo Concession represents one of the few remaining unexplored territories of this celebrated wildlife sanctuary. The Lebombo mountain range runs diagonally across the expanse, interlaced by the N’wanetsi and Sweni Rivers. The area has a good density of game, including cats, elephants, abundant antelope and birdlife, as well as an incredible diversity of smaller animals.

Singita Lebombo has been built to create the ultimate ’wow factor’, raised high above the river, using light tones and open spaces. The 13 luxurious suites are constructed almost entirely of glass for a dramatic effect with vast living spaces, balconies with stunning river views and bathrooms with deep soaking tubs as well as both indoor and outdoor showers. A private villa containing two family suites is set apart from the main lodge for a secluded and exclusive experience. The suites connect to create a four-bedroom property which makes for the perfect family getaway.

Daily game drives offer the chance to spot a wide variety of game, such as leopard, elephant, cheetah and the lion for which the area is renowned, while evening drives let your discover the wonders of nocturnal Africa. Nature walks offer a safari experience from a new perspective, as you track animals and get up close and personal with the wilderness around you.

Indulge in the luxurious health spa, offering everything from the more conventional European massages to Ayurveda and acupuncture, reflexology and aromatherapy. Enjoy a massage in the spa treatment room, or in the comfort of your suite or private deck. For those who enjoy food and wine, Singita is also a unique culinary experience and has a comprehensive wine cellar. Your skilled sommelier will happily match wines to a tasting menu for you.

Singita Lebombo's 13 luxurious suites are constructed almost entirely of glass for a dramatic effect with vast living spaces, balconies with stunning river views and bathrooms with deep soaking tubs and both indoor and outdoor showers. All the suites have a private deck, providing the opportunity to sleep under the stars if preferred. Two family suites, each with its own pool, are contained within the private villa, set apart from the main lodge. The villa has an open-plan kitchen, its own boma, and is fully-staffed.

Singita Lebombo welcomes children over the age of 10 years. Activities for children include cooking and baking with chefs, tours to local community schools, and mountain biking. There is also an exciting Mini Rangers' Course to bring out the little explorer in them. The programme includes activities such as tracking animals, bush survival skills, and astronomy. On completion of the course the Mini Rangers receive certificates to reward all their new-found knowledge!

Facilities at Lebombo include a 25-metre lap pool, elegant viewing decks, cosy seating areas and a luxurious spa. Singita's outstanding cuisine is inspired by African ingredients and flavours combined with Western culinary tradition. Complementing the sophisticated menu is an exceptional wine cellar. There is also a curio shop and WiFi available.

Swimming, game drives, night drives and birdwatching are all included at Singita Lebombo Lodge. The Lebombo area is home to one of the highest concentrations of lion in the Kruger Park, supported by an abundance of plains game (including giraffe, zebra, and various species of antelope). Hippos and crocodiles thrive in the N'wanetsi river, and the riverine habitat provides perfect cover for leopards. Elephant, rhino and buffalo are also present in high concentrations and move freely throughout the Kruger eco-system.

It’s an oft misused word but the rooms at Singita Sweni are quite unique. They are basically a glass box, surrounded by lush greenery with and unobstructed view of the bush. Sweni nestles on the river bed and has just six rooms so is cosy and intimate in feel. Even by the high standards that Singita set themselves, the lodge and rooms are very stylish and include all the luxuries. I thought I was spoilt with two showers (one indoor and one outdoor) as well as a beautiful free-standing bath but then found yet another shower just as I was leaving my room on our last day.

Your private deck is permanently set up with a day-bed and mosquito net so guests are welcome to sleep outside under stars if they wish. The food was incredible and came expertly paired with various wines so dinner is an event in itself. One is never short of eating and drinking opportunities, including surprise ones, such as the stunning latern-lit champagne stop we were treated to on top of a rock as the sun set.

Singita Lebombo is a two-minute drive from Sweni and is its larger, more showy sister. The rooms are exactly the same in design but with different colour schemes and are set high on a hill with panoramic views across Kruger. The two lodges share a beautiful spa.

The guiding at Singita is always first rate and the Kruger proper makes a peaceful antidote to the Sabi Sands. Game viewing requires a little more work (mainly on the part of your guide) but can be very rewarding. In any case the scenery is so stunning you’ll enjoy your game drives no matter what you see.

  • 4WD Game Drives

Go on private or shared game drives in the world famous Greater Kruger Area, South Africa to see the Big 5 - lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo and rhino - and a host of other animals. The Kruger is also a brilliant spot for birders so pack some binoculars.

  • Search for leopard in the Sabi Sands

The Sabi Sands is widely regarded as one of the most rewarding regions for spotting leopard in Africa. With good populations and the ability to go on night game-drives which coincides when these big cats are most active, all you need is good timing!
