The climate in New Zealand is incredibly pleasant, with warm and balmy summers and cold crisp winter months with wonderful clear, blue skies. The warmer high-season months of November to April are perfect for outdoor exploration. The colder months of June to August are the best time to ski.
Both North and South Islands are drier on the east coast, rather than on the west, where mountain ranges act as a trap for the moisture-rich winds from the Tasman Sea. It is also worth remembering that it is usually a few degrees cooler on the South Island than the North Island and as New Zealand has a maritime climate, the weather can change rapidly.
To start planning your holiday to Edenhouse
Not a hotel or a lodge but a gracious luxury home situated on 48 acres of private grounds, Edenhouse is a true treasure in the remarkable landscape of South Island's Orinoco Valley, with stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
Edenhouse is located at the top of the South Island perfectly tucked between the Abel Tasman Park and Nelson, an area that enjoys the most sunshine hours of anywhere in New Zealand. The setting of the house itself is in a quiet, picturesque valley with amazing views in every direction.
Built by the owners and hosts, Peter and Bobbie Martin, the property itself is an exquisitely designed, large and relaxed home furnished to a very high and traditional standard with an emphasis on comfort, understated luxury and attention to detail. With a maximum of six guests at any one time, Edenhouse guarantees absolute personalised service and the utmost attention to detail throughout. Two suites within the house and the free standing cottage in the garden each sleep two people and have plenty of space, outstanding views and large private bathrooms.
The stunning landscaped gardens are large, so as well as enjoying the sitting room, formal dining room, artists studio, den and library, you can also enjoy several courtyard areas providing additional places to eat, drink and relax. These gardens are a cool oasis in the summer whilst open fires throughout the house give warmth and atmosphere in the winter months.
Dining at Edenhouse is truly memorable, whether it is one of the fabulous home cooked breakfasts sourced from local suppliers and producers or a delectable dinner in the formal dining room or in one of the many al fresco venues around the beautiful gardens. Plenty of wonderful restaurants and wineries in the area also provide ample choice for dining.
A visit to Edenhouse offers world-renowned trout fishing rivers, wild mountains, pristine countryside, cerulean bays and the golden, postcard beaches of the Abel Tasman National Park. Artisan food producers, a thriving arts and crafts community and internationally reputed wineries are within easy range. For those so inclined, there are also plenty of extreme adventures involving a helicopter such as wilderness heli-rafting, heli-biking and heli-hiking.
This is, Peter and Bobbie like to say, a place where even the busiest guests will soon reacquaint themselves with the simple pleasures and the unbridled possibilities of life, all in a setting of beauty, privacy and luxury.
Edenhouse has two suites upstairs in the main house, both with lavish en-suite bathrooms and wonderful views. The cottage in the garden is 40 metres from the main house and is split level with a bedroom upstairs and its own bathroom, sitting and dining area, sun deck and excellent amenities though guests still have full use of the house. All of the rooms are spacious, light and are elegantly furnished. All suites and rooms feature: air-conditioning, WiFi, sky TV, laundry service, luxury Irish linen sheets, luxury toiletries, and a well stocked fridge.
Children are welcome to come and stay at Edenhouse and due to the high level of personal service by the hosts, requests are welcome and they will do their best to make families as comfortable and as at home as possible. Cots, highchairs and babysitting services can all be arranged to make your stay as easy and enjoyable.
Edenhouse's hosts serve a fabulous breakfast each morning in the dining room and pre-dinner canapés and drinks are also served for guests choosing to dine at the lodge where much of the food is locally sourced and beautifully prepared. There are also some wonderful outdoor eating areas, a library, den, artist's studio, heliport and transport is available on request. Edenhouse guests have membership to the Monterey House Country Club which has a restaurant, golf, gardens and cooking classes.
If not relaxing at Edenhouse with a good book and chilled glass of local wine or a game of petanque, this area of New Zealand has so much to offer visitors from the golden beaches and native bush of the Abel Tasman National Park where boating, kayaking and hiking are all superb, 4WD, plane and helicopter tours, fly and float fishing trips and wine tours are just some of the adventures to be undertaken here.

This is undoubtedly one of the most welcoming guest houses you can possible find in New Zealand (or anywhere else in the world for that matter!). It is run from the beautiful family home of a couple named Peter and Bobbie, which they designed themselves in the stunning countryside of Nelson. Bobbies tireless efforts in the garden make it a magical setting for a walk which can extend to their 50 acres of paddocks and farm land. Whether Edenhouse is best described as a guesthouse or homestay, it is a truly unique and memorable place to stay, where you will be treated like royalty. Peter and Boobie go out of their way to help with everything, from issues with car hire, directions, excursions or any other advice you may need. They are true gems and have put Edenhouse on the map. There are fantastic vineyards to be enjoyed in the area, along with walks, a visit to the Abel Tasman National Park and more.

Edenhouse is a stunning country house in a picturesque setting, up in the hills surrounded by 50 acres of farmland. After a day out experiencing all that the Abel Tasman National Park has to offer from hearty walks to boat trips, there is no better place to end your day than here. Bobby and Peter will make you feel like part of the family and will welcome you into the house with open arms. Their well-manicured gardens are incredibly peaceful and the ducks waddling around, adds to the charm. The gorse heavy hills opposite are impressive to look at and walk up if you have the energy. Peter and Bobby will entertain you and fill you with some well deserved dinner and share lots of interesting stories as well as advise you on places to visit in New Zealand that you might not have though to before.

In a hidden valley, surrounded by farms, orchards and vineyards, Peter and Bobbie Martin found exactly where they wanted to create their vision of home that would reflect the character of this tranquil corner of paradise. Once they had created Edenhouse, their home was universally thought so stylish and lovely that the decision to open it to guests was inevitable.
Peter and Bobbie enure that when it comes to the finest food and wine, their guests will discover and relish a true taste of the Nelson Tasman region and its sensational land and seascapes. Distinctive, local produce is their passion and they know the secrets of the weekly local markets, where to land a plump trout from a nearby mountain stream and the best tree in the gardens from which to try the tropical, perfumed feijoas and Blackboy peaches.
A stay at Edenhouse is to truly encounter warm, kiwi hospitality, delicious food and world-class wines, all within the confines of a stunningly designed country home in the heart of the sunniest region in New Zealand.
In New Zealand’s outrageously green and gorgeous Orinoco Valley is this spot, so deliciously pretty you want to take a big slow bite out of it. It’s a place to fish for trout and scoop up local vineyard fruitiness. The owners arrived from London in 2002 and in the tiny three-room hotel they’ve built (make sure you nab the separate garden cottage) you’ll find a bit of West Sussex here, a touch of Knightsbridge there. But the old-world charm, alongside striking Cuban dining tables and some deceptively racy artworks, is mixed in with Kiwi common sense. It’s an instant word-of-mouth winner. For the energetic, there is whisking off into the National Park for a day of hiking; for the lazybones there are the peaceful gardens and lying on the lawn, interrupted only by cups of tea and cake.
