Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Any time of year is fine for a visit except from January to March, when heavy rainfall in many areas can make some roads all but impassable, and when there’s a high risk of cyclones in the east and northeast. In general, the best time to travel in most areas is April and October/November. The coolest time to travel anywhere is during the dry season (May to October).

Average maximum temperatures vary from about 30°C in coastal areas (higher in summer) to around 25°C on the hauts plateaux. In Antananarivo and other highland areas, temperatures during winter can drop to 10°C and even lower during the night.

To start planning your holiday to Anjajavy Le Lodge

Anjajavy Le Lodge is a luxurious lodge 120km north of Majunga, on the northwest coast of Madagascar. The hotel is situated on a peninsula and each of the rooms is positioned to allow for stunning ocean views. Lemur viewing from your room is a highlight!

Set along the Mozambique Channel in an extremely diverse environment where flora and fauna offer a perfect reflection of Malagasy nature, the hotel comprises an outstanding complex of 25 rosewood villas facing the sea.

Anjajavy's oasis is a completely unique location and the hotel's pride. It is the result of a search for harmony through all the essences to be found in this immense country which was designed by Camille Muller, a well known Parisian landscape designer who also has a deep love for Madagascar.

The oasis is a genuine Garden of Eden, a place where you will find a vast variety of aquatic plants, papyrus reeds, tree ferns, climbing plants, palm trees that are home to humming birds, lemurs, malachite kingfishers, Malagasy foudis and even the rrongo. A grid of vaporisers maintains a constant humidity level and offers a genuinely satisfying feeling of freshness during the hot hours.

The 450-ha nature reserve alongside the hotel is home to over 1,800 floral species, most of which are endemic to the country along with many medicinal plants. Tsingy, the celebrated millennial coral remains, can be found throughout the forest and overlooking the bay.

The forest is also home to many animal species such as the famous Sifaka lemur (Coquerel’s Sifaka), the bird of paradise, chameleon and Cuvier’s oplure (a type of iguana). The Madagascar fish eagle takes to the sea and the coral reef, a magical combination of shapes and colours in a world of silence that remains untouched.

Each of the 25 villas features a large terrace overlooking the sea, a living room area and breakfast area and a bedroom. A small staircase provides access to the first floor which features a relaxation room that can be used as an office or children’s/guest room. The bathroom boasts a vast bath with separate lavatories. The rooms are air-conditioned.

Although there are no specific child care facilities, children are most welcome at Anjajavy l'hotel. Food and meal times can be adjusted to suit younger guests and babysitting can be arranged for those that require it; it often provides a nice break for parents.

Facilities include a fantastic swimming pool facing the ocean, a restaurant and a bar. The excellent chef will not fail to impress with an international menu of fresh produce with just of touch of Malagasy specialties. There is a boutique which offers a wide range of Malagasy handcrafted and beach articles.

Activities include 4-wheel drive or boat trips as well as many guided walks to explore the reserve. There is plenty to do on or in the water including water-skiing, windsurfing, snorkelling, canoeing and beach volley ball. Deep sea fishing trips can also be arranged.

Anjajavy is the perfect balance between beach relaxation and wildlife activities. A luxury lodge on the beach, you can unwind here and enjoy sailing and snorkelling or perhaps a romantic beach picnic, but you can also go in search of lemurs and fossa in the forest. A highlight for me was afternoon teatime in The Oasis where the habituated lemurs swing through the trees about you a very entertaining way to spend the afternoon!

Anjajavy occupies a fantastically remote piece of land on the west coast of Madagascar and can only be accessed by charter plane. Were met on arrival by the hotel manager, who gives us a warm welcome and drives us the short distance to the lodge in the back of an open pick-up furnished with comfy, covered benches. With the wind in my hair, I feel truly on holiday. The rooms have gorgeous sea views and a private deck complete with hammock. With just 25 rooms and Relais &Chateaux accreditation its perfect for honeymooners but the rooms are also well set up for families with a mezzanine housing twin beds. The rooms at the very end of the row (1 to 4) are the best for romance, being far from the main area and with private steps down onto the beach. There are also rooms closer to the main area, which can be accessed on the flat that would be good for older couples and young families. The beach is very attractive but it is worth noting that there are rocks in places. Theres no diving at Anjajavy but boat trips around the bay are a superb way to spend the afternoon, stopping to explore giant baobabs, coral mushroom islands and take a dip in the ocean. You can also go waterskiing in the mangroves when the tides are high and there are numerous guided walks to be had around the reserve. Of course, its not compulsory to be on the go all day and we did enjoy lazing by the large outdoor pool and sipping pre-dinner cocktails over a game of pool. We were impressed by the food and it was easily the best I experienced in Madagascar. Anjajavy is often called a mini-Madagascar and there really is great variety here. One can even spot lemurs during afternoon tea in the oasis garden!

  • Moramba Bay Boat Trip

Take a boat trip to Moramba Bay where you will explore the mushroom-shaped islands and see fine examples of tsingy topped with lush vegetation, including baobabs. This scenic bay is also the best place to spot the rare Madagascan fish eagle.
