Best to go in the dry season from December to May - perfect for the Christmas or Easter holidays
We would usually recommend travelling from December to April. The rainy season in Guatemala & Belize makes unpaved roads more difficult from mid-May to mid-October, and into November and December in the north and east. The height of the foreign tourist season is from Christmas to Easter. Things become acute around Christmas, New Year’s and Easter, when locals take holidays too– in many places you’ll need to book ahead. Another high season runs June to August, when throngs of North Americans descend on Guatemala & Belize.
A varied and relaxing itinerary through Guatemala and Belize that is ideal for families looking for a dash of adventure, offering soaring jungle temples, colourful market towns, plentiful wildlife and the powdery white sand beaches of Belize's Caribbean.
Begin with two nights in the beautiful Guatemalan highlands, staying in colonial Antigua with its cobbled streets, plazas, seventeenth-century churches and colourful houses. Hotels in Antigua are charming, often converted colonial homes, and are ideally located for exploring the town, its colourful markets, galleries and excellent eateries.
From here, fly down to the lowland rainforests of the Peten to visit Tikal, arguably the Maya world’s most beautiful ancient city. Pyramid temples emerge from the dense rainforest, as colourful parrots screech overhead and howler monkeys swing from the trees - navigate this ancient citadel with a knowledgeable guide who will enjoy telling stories that bring the city and the customs of its former people to life.
Driving across the border into Belize provides a real change of scenery as you move from the lowland jungles to the cooler hills of the Maya Highlands. Adventures abound in this region, from horse riding to canoeing, walking along the nature trails to spot wildlife and exploring the lesser known Maya ruins of Belize and jungle cave systems to discover ancient treasures.
After three nights here, fly to the coast of Belize to spend four nights of luxury at Naia Resort & Spa, a stylish hotel great for families and set on the white powder sands and turquoise waters of the Caribbean. The spa here is fantastic so great for unwinding, whilst the beach offers plenty for the kids to do, with kayaks, paddleboards, snorkels and bikes available.
For anyone keen on diving or fishing, we would recommend adding on a few days at Turneffe Island, located a short distance from Belize's famous Blue Hole and miles of untouched coral reef.
Leaving right from your hotel doorstep, this biking tour is a great fun, half day excursion in the scenic Antigua valley, riding through local villages, farms and fields along back roads and trails. A perfect way to see real local life in Guatemala.
Follow trails through the rain forest visiting Mayan plazas and ceremonial sites, including Skeleton Cave. Finish the day at Big Rock Falls, where you can take a refreshing dip and enjoy a picnic lunch before heading back to your lodge.
Experience one of the Maya world's most impressive and evocative temple complexes, Tikal, and feel like a true Indiana Jones. Tikal is arguably the greatest of all Mayan cities. Enjoy a fascinating private guided tour with your very own archaeology guide.
