Located in the gloriously untouched hills of northern Laos, Muang La Resort is a beautiful boutique retreat that provides access to one of the most untouched and pristine regions of Southeast Asia. It's one of Laos' hidden gems.
A stylish and comfortable boutique retreat in a very wild part of Laos
Fantastic excursions on offer, including mountain biking, hiking and 4X4 safaris
Located close to some very authentic and colourful Akha and Hmong tribal villages
Fantastic food considering its location, mainly serving Laos and French fusion cuisine
Muang La Resort sits in the wilds of northern Laos, home to gloriously green hills dotted with untouched hill-tribe villages. It's easily one of the best places to experience and learn about authentic hill-tribe cultures in Southeast Asia, as the area is largely unexplored by tourism.
The resort itself is perched on a wild river flanked by dense jungle. It's an idyllic and very peaceful setting; the striking views are worth the journey alone. The 10 rooms, spread through 5 villas, are built using traditional Laotian techniques, however they are modern, colourful and contemporary inside. With polished wooden floors, sleek white walls, designer furniture, jewel coloured textiles and terrazzo bathrooms, Muang La easily offers the most spoiling rooms north of Luang Prabang.
When staying in Muang La, most guests will spend their time exploring the area. Trekking, cycling, cookery classes and 4X4 jeep safaris are among the most popular excursions available from the resort. If you're lucky you might catch the Akha tribal market as well! For those who enjoy a bit of pampering there are wonderful natural hot water pools as well as a spa room for a relaxing massage.
Despite being so remote, Muang La Resort offers some of the best service and food in Laos; think 5 course Laos/French fusion food in the evenings and quality picnic lunches when you are out exploring.
Getting there isn't too difficult to either; there's a flight from Vientiane to nearby Oudomxay, it combines easily with Nong Khiaw and it's approximately a 5-6 hour drive and scenic boat journey directly from Luang Prabang.
We feel that Muang La Resort really is a one-of-a-kind property that opens up a glorious part of Laos. It's also ideal for adventure enthusiasts who enjoy a slice of comfort and those interested in hill-tribe cultures.
When to visit
Make sure you ask your hosts about the Akha market, which only happens every week or two. If you're lucky, your stay may fall on market day, in which case you can pop along!
