Get under the skin of Afro-Brazilian culture as you explore the colonial city of Salvador, before heading to Brazil's sweeping northeast coast for some relaxation and adventures along wave-bashed beaches of Guajiru and Jericoacoara, all the while staying in charming boutique properties.

  1. Fly to Salvador

  2. Days 1-3: Salvador

Begin in the colonial centre of Salvador de Bahia, the beating heart of Afro-Brazilian culture. This coastal city offers a wonderful insight into the history of the region, as well as the intriguing religion of Candomblé. Discover its ornate churches and cobbled streets, along with its persistent drumming and music which really brings the city to life. Salvador is also famed as the home of capoeira, a dance-like martial art which makes for a wonderful spectacle.

    Accommodation: Villa Bahia (2 nights)

  3. Days 3-4: Praia de Guajiru, Northeast Coast, Brazil

Fly north to Fortaleza and head further to Zorah Beach Hotel on Praia de Guajiru, a long stretch of white sand where windy conditions favour those in search of kite and windsurfing. This comfortable oasis is the perfect place to break up the drive to Jericoacoara, which is isolated by sweeping sand dunes further north.

Accommodation: Zorah Beach Hotel (1 night)

  4. Days 4-8: Jericoacoara

Drive along the beach with waves lapping at your side to reach Jericoacoara, one of the world's great kitesurfing meccas. This laidback surf haven is barefoot bliss, where even the roads are made of sand and dune buggies the preferred method of transportation. Here you can be as active or as relaxed as you like, heading out into the desert for some dune bashing, dips in lagoons, kitesurfing or horseriding excursions, or simply lounging poolside. For those with a keen interest we can arrange a full kitesurfing course for beginners or more advanced surfers. Stay at boutique hotel Chili Beach which has a laidback ambience and beautiful beachside gardens.

    Accommodation: Chili Beach (4 nights)

  5. Fly Home

  • Candomblé: Religion in Salvador

Candomblé is an amalgamation of African religions and beliefs which were brought to Brazil with the slaves and has now become a prevalent part of the Bahian culture. Candomblé means 'dance in honour of the Gods' and remains a huge part of daily life here.

  • Discover Jericoacoara's Lagoons by Buggy

Take a dune buggy tour from Jericoacoara to explore the most spectacular lagoons in the area and appreciate the true beauty this quieter corner of Brazil has to offer. Concentrated mainly within the National Park, this region is an unspoilt paradise.

  • Drumming in Salvador

Bahia is the percussive heart of Brazil. Feel the soul of Brazilian music with a percussion lesson in Salvador, and fall under the spell of the mesmerising African rhythms. Workshops are pitched at levels to suit all talents and ages - great for families!
