Visit the Westman Islands
Lying just off Iceland’s southern coast, the Westman Islands are a beautiful, sparsely populated collection of intriguing geological formations, ancient Viking remains and rugged volcanoes. With a population of just 4,000 people, the main island of Heimay can be explored on foot and you may like to take a guided tour that includes the dramatic Eldfell volcano. As an alternative you could take a city tour to the main sights, visiting the ruins of Viking houses in the Herjólfsdalur valley, the volcanoes of Helgafell and Idfell and discovering the volcanic history of the islands at the Eldheimar Museum, including the eruption that created the UNESCO listed Surtsey Island.
