We absolutely loved Kurland when we visited it is nothing short of utterly charming, with large and airy Cape Dutch rooms set amidst swathes and swathes of the most exquisitely scented roses we spent hours just wandering around the gardens, it seemed there was a rose in every color possible and the scent pervaded the entire property. Quite apart from this Kurland is actually a working polo farm while we didnt have time for a ride, we spent an enjoyable time getting to know some of the ponies. The rooms here are just wonderful, decorated with a nod to the rose theme, and everything in its place. It felt like a beautiful English country home dotted of course with vases and vases of blousy roses. We popped up to Kurland Villa, Peters private home nothing short of spectacular from the first view as you round the bend, we were greeted warmly by his three dogs. The House is beautiful, a warm, welcoming family home on a very grand scale we both loved the piano room! But it also felt like a place you could kick off your shoes and sink into one of the many squishy sofas with a book for the afternoon. Just perfect for families traveling together or even a group of friends.

Kurland never disappoints, owner Peter Behr and his team constantly deliver at this fantastic working polo estate in the Tsitsikamma Mountains, just outside Plettenberg Bay. So many activities to chose from, it's a favorite with couples and families alike. A really spoiling country estate a short hop from the buzzy coastal town of Plett. Kurland is a real favorite of ours.

I knew that Kurland would be impressive before our visit but it wasnt until we arrived that I understood quite how special it is. It feels like that special piece of England that you cant ever quite put your finger on but you know when youre there. Private cottages, overlooking green lawns dotted with oak trees and the grazing horses and ponies in the fields beyond. Just perfect. Combine this with the fact its just a few minutes outside of Plettenbberg Bay with its golden beaches and rolling breakers and you have the best of everything.
Most cottages are built over two levels with a lounge, bedroom and bathroom downstairs and a second childrens bedroom and bathroom above. Beware of some of the cottages have internal staircases but some only external ones which wouldnt be unsuitable for families with younger children as the stair case runs up the side of the cottage into a separate external door for the self-contained room above.
For the ultimate luxury take one of the two cottages with private terraces upstairs both with large plunge pools overlooking the fields and hills in the distance. Horses and polo are a huge part of life at Kurland with regular matches taking place throughout the summer and horses available for guests of all experience to ride on site.

Kurland is our absolute favorite property in the Plettenberg Bay area. With gorgeous Cape Dutch buildings set in this huge parkland with a lovely pool and spa it feels incredibly peaceful and luxurious. It is actually a large polo estate so you look out onto fields with numerous polo ponies and large polo pitches. Guests can ride the horses on the estate (there are small ponies for children), burn around on quad bikes or mountain bike around the property - it is great fun for all ages!
As a couple you can spend your days lazing by the pool or enjoying the spa, heading into Plettenberg and enjoying the beaches or heading out into the buzzing town center.
For families there is so much to do and see and families return year on year; families come to South Africa to head only to Kurland for 10 days or longer. As one guest said to me once ''Kurland makes traveling with children easy''. Some rooms have the most divine attic rooms which are beautifully designed to be a children's haven - equipped with mini dressing gowns, boxes of toys, fluffy teddies etc etc they will feel right at home. There is a separate children's play area behind the hotel with sand pits, pool and full of toys and game. Staff can take the children off for treasure hunts and picnics in the property if you wanted to laze by the adult pool or have a massage. Activities in the area including monkey land, elephant park and bird park are to name a few.
I really could not recommend Kurland enough, every guest we send there returns absolutely gushing with praise!
Peter Behr is one of the owners of Kurland, the estate his grandfather bought in 1941 and which he has turned into a world-class polo ground and boutique hotel. 'There isn't a lot of sophistication in town,' says the dashing forty-something over a sundowner on the Cape Dutch-style veranda overlooking 700 hectares of smartly trimmed gardens, paddocks and forests that rise into the purple hills beyond. 'And that's precisely the point. People come for the lifestyle: the boating, the beaches, the walking, the riding. It has its own little micro-weather system, which is fabulous, and much more moderate than the Cape. The beaches are pretty empty. The swimming's good. And of course, the parties...'
The grand house now used as their living space - to hunker in winter in plush living rooms, to dine beneath chandeliers and sit out on expansive verandahs - is considered the most gracious and opulent place to stay along the coast. The oak floorboards are wide and highly polished. Rooms are furnished with precious antiques, family portraits and heavy curtains. Bed linen is embroidered and finely pressed. The dining room has roaring fires (in winter), heavy silver and fine white crockery. And the food is gutsy rather than gourmet: enormous bowls of seafood spaghetti; hefty ostrich fillets on spinach; passion-fruit brulee.
