The rocky slopes of the Altai Mountains have an extreme climate, receiving the most rainfall throughout the year, supporting the growth of dense forests and alpine fauna. Home to the elusive snow leopard and the famous eagle hunting Kazakh people, temperatures in the Altai Mountains can feel frigid even in summer, particularly after nightfall. The famous Golden Eagle festival takes place each October, where Kazakh hunters gather together in the mountains to pitch their hunting eagles against one another, testing their speed, agility, and accuracy in an ancient custom that dates back hundreds of years.

To start planning your vacation to Ulgii Private Ger Camp

Journey to the far west of Mongolia and experience life amongst the eagle hunters. This traditional nomadic ger camp on the bank of the Eregt River, set up purely for the festival, brings touches of luxury to some of Mongolia’s most wild terrain.

On the vast plains of western Mongolia, at the foot of the Altai Mountains, lies a private ger camp that offers a taste of traditional life here in the far reaches of the country. This is a land of eagle hunters and snow leopards, of glaciers and remote tribes, all thriving in a vast and formidable landscapes that stretches for thousands of miles along Mongolia’s western border.

Each of the tents, or ‘gers’, are constructed in the traditional style, from wood and canvas, with plenty of space for a comfortable double bed and handmade furniture. Beds are cosy and draped in locally made blankets and soft linens, and they are heated by wood burning stove during the colder spells at night. There are two shared bathroom gers, with plush towels, warm robes and hairdryers, and hot water for a short shower, complete with biodegradable toiletries.

Meals are prepared and served in the main dining ger at the heart of the camp, drawing inspiration from traditional Kazakh dishes that rely largely on mutton and beef. Warming, hearty fare is the cuisine of choice in this region of Mongolia and the camp chefs work hard to produce elegant and refined versions of local dishes. Western fare is also served alongside the more local cuisine, and certain dishes can be reimagined into vegetarian incarnations.

Days will be spent hiking and climbing on the foothills of the mountains, meeting ethnic tribes that still practice the ancient arts of eagle hunting and throat singing, and for the lucky few that visit during the month of October, witness the spectacle of the Eagle Hunting Festival that celebrates the melting pot of cultures in this remote corner of Mongolia.

The camp’s gers are constructed in the same way the nomadic tribespeople of Mongolia have been building their dwellings for centuries. These round tents are private, spacious and comfortable, with double beds, a small wash basin and a wood burning stove. A generator creates enough electricity for personal electronic items such as cameras and phones to be charged in your ger.

Activities here in the rugged west of Mongolia focus around the unique mix of ethnic tribes that inhabit the area around Ulgii. Visit the famous Kazakh eagle hunters, learn more about the ancient art of Mongolian throat singing, or simply explore the stark and beautiful mountains and steppes on foot.
