Description

Rangra Wasi is a charming eco-lodge in the Chachapoyas region of Peru, ideally placed for exploring the famous Leymebamba Museum, Kuelap ruins and the cliffside tombs of Revash. Expect comfortable accommodation, delicious food and warm hospitality.

Perched in the hills just outside of Leymebamba in the north of Peru, Rangra Wasi boasts a wonderful location with impressive views across the Utcubamba Valley. This is a charming base for exploring the Chachapoyas region which is home to a wealth of cultural and natural attractions, the closest of which is the famous Leymebamba Museum which contains over 200 mummies. The mummies were discovered at the nearby Lake of the Condors and are exceptionally well preserved, proving for a slightly gory yet insightful visit.

Rangra Wasi itself is a family owned and managed lodge with just two bungalows and two bi-level cottages, all of which come complete with floor-to-ceiling glass windows and terraces to maximize the views. They are simple yet comfortable and plenty of blankets are provided to combat the cold nights. Service is highly attentive and personalized, with a good level of English spoken. Dining here is a standout, with a fantastic chef serving up different three-course dinners daily using ingredients grown in the lodge's vast gardens, as well as an impressive breakfast spread. This is a perfect option for a relaxing stay in the southern part of the valley.

The main lodge building contains a lounge area with fireplace and dining room with open kitchen where guests can enjoy all their meals and curl up with a book in the evenings. The lodge can also be used as a base for visiting the nearby tombs of Revash and the impressive hilltop ruins of Kuelap which date back to pre-Inca times.

Rangra Wasi has a home from home feel, with friendly owners and cosy corners to curl up in when the sun goes down. The two highlights of my stay were the views which can be enjoyed from all of the rooms, and the food. Willy is an incredible chef and every dish is a work of art, using ingredients grown on property. On top of this, breakfast can be enjoyed al fresco as hummingbirds flutter about in front of you. The rooms are comfortable and plenty of blankets are provided which is needed at this altitude, you can really feel the cold set in as the sun goes down. A few homely touches such as rugs wouldn't go amiss but that aside it's a really lovely place to stay and explore the highlights of Leymebamba and the southern part of the Utcubamba Valley.
