Average time to visit
The Mediterranean climate makes Tuscany a year round destination. It is important to remember that the main tourism season stretches from mid-April to the end of September with July and August being peak months. The best time to visit Tuscany is in the quieter part of the season, from April to June and from September to October when weather is usually good, prices lower and there are "fewer" tourists. Many have also discovered the advantages of visiting during the "low season" (late autumn and early spring) as rates are lower and the reduced number of tourists is visible.

Cocooned in 750 acres of organic farmlands, landscaped gardens and rolling Tuscan countryside, Borgo Pignano is housed in an 18th century villa, cottages and farmhouses with exceptional views and one of the most picturesque pools imaginable.
Lying at the heart of the breathtaking Tuscan countryside, a mesmerising tapestry of rolling hills, fields, forests and terracotta-roofed towns, Borgo Pignano is an elegantly restored 18th century villa surrounded by quaint farmhouses and cottages that offer a restful and restorative escape. Yet despite its secluded setting, the foodie heartlands of San Gimignano and Pienza, the medieval city of Siena and the famed tower of Pisa are all within reach, should you succeed in resisting the lure of the pool loungers.
With just 28 rooms, suites and maisonettes and one exclusive use farmhouse, Borgo Pignano feels more like a home than a hotel, albeit one with breath taking views and a design flair lifted straight from the pages of an interior’s magazine. Each is individual in its decor, with wooden shutters or elegant drapes, original frescoes, Persian rugs, wooden floors or sinkable carpets. Some boast canopied beds, others a grand piano, yet each shares the same thoughtful attention to detail. With views of olive groves, vineyards, manicured gardens or rambling countryside, there are few more tranquil views to awake to or to soak in over a morning espresso. Borgo Pignano also offers a wealth of activities for families from guided tours of the farm to horse riding and during the summer months a dedicated children’s team arrange daily activities for children all combining fun activities with learning about nature and the outdoors.
Dining at Borgo Pignano is a pleasure, to be savoured over long, lazy afternoons and balmy evenings. Warm breads drip with locally produced honey, unctuous olive oils come fresh from the groves, and seasonal fruits and vegetables complement meat and eggs from the farm. Innovative dishes can be enjoyed in the refined elegance of the Villa Pignano while the dreamy terrace of the Restaurant Al Fresco opens in the summer months, a charming spot to sip a glass of crisp biodynamic wine enveloped by the fragrant blooms of the garden.
Views don’t come much more spellbinding than that of the rolling hills of Tuscany from the pool at Borgo Pignano. Carved from an ancient limestone quarry, this heated infinity pool gazes out over the Tuscan countryside, an endless panorama of verdant beauty. Chaises longues and parasols dot the surrounding terrace, while an outdoor bar is nearby during the summer to keep you refreshed throughout the day. To keep both children and adults happy, there is a separate pool for under-12s.
Borgo Pignano presents something of a catch-22; a wealth of activities and sightseeing potential lie within reach but once you’ve stepped into the embrace of its picturesque setting, sumptuous accommodation and blissful pool you may find it difficult to leave. Should you succeed in dragging yourself from the English gardens or olive groves, you could find yourself horseback riding through wooded valleys or strolling through Siena’s ancient alleyways. Closer to home, you need not leave the property to enjoy yoga, a cooking class, numerous bike trails, wine tasting or a tour of the organic beehives.
Being awoken by the gentle song of the birds or a shard of Tuscan sunshine breaking through the shutters, stepping out into tranquil gardens to enjoy a morning coffee, or simply turning over in crisp white bed linens for a few more minutes; mornings at Borgo Pignano always start in the best possible way. Spread across the villa and a number of cottages, the property can comfortably accommodate couples, families and friends in the Rooms, Suites and Maisonettes, which also boast their own kitchen and living areas. Guests can also exclusively rent out Farmhouse La Fonte located just a short walk from the main villa – ideal for small groups or extended families looking for a little more privacy whilst still enjoying all the amenities of the main villa.
Despite its sophisticated appearance and romantic hideaways, Borgo Pignano is a paradise for children. A dedicated children’s pool provides the freedom to splash to their heart’s content, while the never-ending gardens provide ample opportunity for outdoor adventures. During the summer months a team of childcare staff are on hand to entertain with everything from creating flower dyes to clay modelling. Many of the Maisonettes and Cottages are ideal for families, with multiple bedrooms and kitchen facilities to bridge the gap between meals.
The amenities of Borgo Pignano are such that you need never leave the 750 acres of the estate. Whether dining on fresh, seasonal produce freshly harvested from the estate, or divine pastries that can trace their provenance to the grains grown on the farm, the food here is rather special. With an emphasis on ‘zero miles’, this is sustainable living at its most luxurious. This sustainable ethos extends to the Pignano Wellness Center, where ingredients grown organically on the estate are used to indulgent effect in the massages while the dry sauna and steam bath soothe away any lingering stress not already dissolved by the tranquil surrounds.
Days at Borgo Pignano can be as action-packed or as soporific as you wish. Laze by the pool and admire the countryside from a distance or hike out across undulating hills, fragrant olive groves and woodlands. Take a day trip to sample the culinary delights of San Gimignano or the medieval wonders of Siena and the infamous tower of Pisa.
