Good time to visit
Average time to visit
Winter is the perfect time to visit Finnish Lapland and Northern Norway. The winter temperatures can vary anywhere between 0°C and -40°C. The average temperature in January is -14°C, but the cold is not biting because the air is dry. There can be as much as one meter of snow and it usually lasts until May. There is potential for Northern Lights viewing throughout the winter months.
We design each itinerary around you, so this suggested itinerary is a starting point that we can tweak or transform into something completely bespoke to you. Call us on 858 345 1764 to start planning your vacation.
Itinerary
The far northern tips of Finland and Norway offer a remote, icy wilderness with snow-covered forests and frozen lakes. Combining these two Scandinavian countries head off the beaten track to vast open spaces, to try adventurous activities such as ice-fishing, snowmobiling and husky sledding. This itinerary offers great fun for all the family along with some culture in the inspiring capital of Helsinki where you’ll soak up the modern vibe and sample some local delicacies.
-
Days 1-2: Helsinki
You’ll arrive into Helsinki, the capital city which is spread around a network of islands. You’ll notice many influences from Russian architecture alongside bold Finnish designs, which showcases the very best in cutting-edge modern design. We’ve included a private, guided city tour for you where you’ll visit the main highlights of Helsinki such as the Lutheran Cathedral, the University, Presidential Palace and City Hall. As well as having a thriving design culture Helsinki is also becoming known for its creative cuisine using local meat such as reindeer, elk and bear to make inventive and tasty dishes.
Accommodation: Klaus K (1 night)
-
Days 2-4: Finnish Lapland
Boarding a domestic flight in Helsinki, travel an hour and a half north, over the Arctic circle touching down in the winter wonderland of Finnish Lapland. A short transfer takes you to your wilderness lodge, where you’ll really be able to appreciate the calm and serenity of Lapland in this remote location. The accommodation is typically Finnish in style, with wood cabins featuring large windows where you can look out onto the snow-covered trees outside. As you’ll be staying far away from cities and artificial lights, chances of spotting the elusive Northern Lights are increased here and there are a number of different activities for you to choose from to set out in search of this phenomenon either by heated sleigh, car or snowshoe.
The following day we have included an ice fishing trip by snowmobile. Finland features over 150,000 lakes, many of which freeze over during the winter months, covering the fish below. In order to still be able to reach the fish the art of ice fishing has developed over the years and involves drilling a hole deep into the ice where a hook is then dropped, luring the fish to the surface. Lunch will be provided for you, and perhaps if you’re lucky you may even be able to eat your own catch! We've also included a visit to a reindeer farm where you'll have the chance for a close encounter with these beautiful animals.
Accommodation: Wilderness Hotel Inari (2 nights)
-
Days 4-6: Northern Norway
For your next destination you will drive further north once again and over the border into northern Norway. The scenic drive takes around three and a half hours, taking you around frozen lakes towards the town of Kirkenes. The unique Kirkenes snow hotel is re-built every year with decorative rooms made from snow! If the idea of sleeping on a bed of ice is an adventure too far for you, fear not as there is also warm accommodation available in the form of cosy cabins. There is a husky farm on site, so you will have the opportunity to meet the husky dogs and set off on your own husky sledding experience. This is an excellent way to explore the vast snowy surrounds, taking you even further off the beaten track with stunning landscapes to admire.
Accommodation: Kirkenes Snow Hotel (2 nights)
