The basics of ice-fishing are very simple; all you need is a frozen body of water, and just five centimeters of ice is enough to bare the weight of a person. Once your guide has helped you choose the perfect fishing spot, you need a core drill to make a hole in the ice. Catching fish is largely down to luck, although experienced fishers will know how to choose the right spot, taking in to consideration the direction of the wind and understanding how the fish behave at different times of the year. The locals usually know the best places to go so keep an eye out for where they are setting up!

Spring is the best time for ice-fishing as the fish are more eager to take bait at this time of year.
