Lake Wanaka Cruise and Island Nature Walk (Shared)
Wanaka, Central Otago and the Southern Lakes, New Zealand
The magical nature reserve of Mou Waho Island is home to the rare flightless Buff Weka, and a picturesque spot to explore the bush, or simply sit back and relax on the beach after a scenic boat cruise across Lake Wanaka to the island.
Reached by boat across Lake Wanaka, the remote island of Mou Waho is a hidden gem for both bird enthusiasts and beach-junkies. Predator-free, it is home to the rare Buff Weka, extinct on the mainland since 1920. Explore the island on foot with a one-hour guided walk which reveals the island’s secret, a lake at the very top with spectacular views over the Southern Alps. Enjoy ‘High Tea’ with the panoramic views and sounds of the birds. For those preferring a more leisurely pursuit, relax on the beach and enjoy the birdlife and tranquil surrounds. Taking around three and a half hours, this is a perfect morning or afternoon excursion to explore an area of great scenic beauty and excellent birdlife.
