Average time to visit

If you're visiting Sossusvlei, the best thing to do is avoid the summer, which is extremely hot. Therefore, the best time to visit southern Namibia is in winter (May and September) but bear in mind that the desert regions can be bitterly cold at this time of year. The climate of the southern coast is hospitable from February to May, but quite cool and misty year-round, and particularly windy in August.

Wolwedans Dunes Lodge lies amongst the flame red dunes of the NamibRand Nature Reserve, in nine comfortable wooden cottages offering a perfect setting in which to relax, reflect and immerse yourself in the desert.

Wolwedans Dunes Lodge is set on top of the dunes, in the heart of the NamibRand Nature Reserve, to the south of Sossusvlei. It is an incredibly peaceful place defined by dramatic red sand dunes sitting beneath vast open skies.

The design of the main lodge and nine cottages (built in wood and canvas) reflects their natural surroundings and private wooden verandas allow guests to sit and simply drink in panoramic views stretching in every direction. The ambience is that of a tented camp while at the same time offering great comfort and privacy. The main area, comprises two lounges, a number of sun downer decks, a fireplace, tea deck, library, wine cellar and two dining rooms. The many verandas look out over superb views, as does the open-air swimming pool. Those who seek total seclusion will be attracted to the Mountain View Suite, which provides a private living and dining area and great comfort and style.

Game drives and guided walks offer sightings of oryx and plains game but also reveal the fascinating wonders of intricate desert ecosystems while hot air ballooning gives guests access to heart-stopping views of this unique landscape.

Building style is a combination of wooden structures and canvas blinds, opening up to the desert beyond. Dunes Lodge reflects the ambience of a tented camp, but provides the comfort and protection of a permanent building. Each of the nine spacious chalets with en-suite bathrooms sports a private verandah, which connects to vast stretches of untouched sand. Sleeping with the canvas blinds open is just like sleeping under the stars.

Children are most welcome but there are no specific child care facilities. Meal times and food can be tailored to suit younger guests.

The main complex consists of two lounges, a number of sundowner decks, a cosy fireplace, a tea deck, a library, the wine cellar and two dining rooms. The lodge also has a welcoming swimming pool, which is suspended above the sand and has lovely views of the surrounding landscape.

Activities from Dune Lodge include guided nature walks and safari drives, scenic drives into the dunes and guests may also arrange to take a hot air balloon flight.

Set amongst the dunes and with sweeping views out to the mountains beyond Wolwedans is one of Namibia's most famous properties and with good reason. The nature drives bring the desert to life and the water holes in front of camp is one of the only water sources for the desert Oryx for miles in all direction. Making Wolwedans a truly special place.
