Snorkelling with turtles is a magical experience. You are nearly guaranteed to see turtles in Akumal Bay, especially with a guide. They feed on the turtle grass that grows on the bottom of the bay. Akumal Bay is known for its assorted species of sea turtles which use the beaches for breeding, feeding and rearing their young. Akumal is the home of Centro Ecologico de Akumal, a non-profit group dedicated to environmental and marine research, education and sea turtle protection. This protected environment provides an optimal opportunity to see the animals in their natural habitat, including the many different species of fish and plant life. Akumal means place of the turtles in the Mayan language.
