Snorkel with whale sharks

The whale shark is the largest fish in the sea, reaching lengths of around 12 metres. They prefer warm waters and are often found near to the surface in areas where nutrient rich colder water rises up - these conditions favour blooms of plankton on which the sharks feed.
From the end of May to mid-September, their migratory path brings them near to the tropical waters of Contoy island, located in the north of the Yucatan peninsula. Between July and August it is common to find up to 40 of these gentle giants in one area, which is truly incredible - Keep your eyes peeled for sea turtles, giant manta rays and dolphins too! Whale sharks are surprisingly fast swimmers so be prepared to move your fins to keep up.
The whale shark is considered a protected species and it is important to follow the rules set by the guide to ensure as little impact on the environment and these creatures as possible. We highly recommend doing this excursion as a private experience to maximise the number of times you are able to enter the water.
