Italy

With long stretches of Mediterranean and Amalfi coastline, Italy has the beautiful Tuscan countryside, vineyards, charming cities and fabulous food. Head to Florence for renaissance architecture, to Venice, the "city of water", or to Rome for beautiful historical monuments. As well as beautiful cities, the island of Sicily has brilliant coastal scenery.

Breathtaking countryside, beautiful old cities, the Amalfi Coast and of course renowned cuisine are all on offer in Italy, a favourite with honeymooners and families alike. Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance, has many treats for visitors. Brunelleschi's Duomo, the Academia - home of Michelangelo's David - and Ghiberti's bronze Baptistery doors to name just a few. Venice, the city of water, cannot fail to capture your imagination with its wonderful architecture, great cafe society and romantic gondola rides not to mention archaeological sites and buildings, as well as fabulous shopping and dining.

Away from the bustle of the cities, Italy's countryside has enchanted the British since the era of the 'Grand Tour'. The stunningly beautiful Amalfi Coast stands out for its rugged cliffs, cascades of brightly coloured houses, lemon groves and olive trees on terraced hillsides, all tumbling down to an aquamarine sea. Tuscany is home to vineyards, Cypress trees and rounded hills. The enchanting island of Sicily is full of art, history, breathtaking views and, as always in Italy, superb food.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued travel advisories advising against all non-essential travel to Northern Italy. From 8 March, the Italian authorities extended the area of isolation to cover the whole of the Lombardy region and the provinces of Modena, Parma, Piacenza, Reggio Emilia and Rimini (all in Emilia Romagna); Pesaro e Urbino (in Marche); Venezia and Padova (in Veneto); Asti and Alessandria (in Piemonte). The advice will be regularly reviewed and may be changed depending on how the fast-changing coronavirus situation evolves. Also see our travel information regarding Coronavirus.
